3.73 or 4.10

I have an 09 4.0L v6 w/ manual 5 speed transmission. I am debating what gears would work best the 3.73 or 4.10. Any suggestions?

Re: 3.73 or 4.10

for a manual trans most like 3.73. That will shave off about 2-2.5 tenths in your quarter mile times. Expect 2 mpg loss or maybe 3 on interstate and a gain of about 1 mpg city~ you can do the math to figure out percentage the rpms will be vs where they are now.

You will need a tune to calibrate the speedometer.

Re: 3.73 or 4.10

Are you planning on boosting your Stang? I have 3:73's in my GT and 4:10's in my V6. I figure my 150 hp pony needed all the help it could get!

Re: 3.73 or 4.10

Is the car your daily driver? If you drive a lot of highway miles I'd lean towards 3.73's, since your car is a manual. Though I've been starting to think that 4.10's wouldn't be that bad in a manual v6 car. The taller gears might help your top end rather than reduce it. Gas mileage loss is probably 1-2 mpgs tops on the highway, so if it's not a primary concern, I'd consider the 4.10's. I'd base it on how much you drive the car.

I'd also have a tlok (limited slip differential) installed when you have the gears installed. You can have it installed at the same time as the gears, and it will give you better traction, more handling, better launches, and 2 wheel burnouts.

Just make sure you get both the gears and tlok for the 7.5" rearend, not the 8.8", that's the larger v8 rear and gears/tloks for that size diff. won't fit. Also buy the stuff new, don't buy used, it may have already gained a wear pattern or incurred damage leading to cracks or failure and will damage your entire rearend.

Re: 3.73 or 4.10

gears 200
tloc 200 (so both wheels spin)
install 200-400
tuner - 400
tune from a good source 100-150

What kind of RPM's have you noticed with 4.10's?

Re: 3.73 or 4.10

Yah it's somewhat pricey, but gears/tlok are two of the more effective mods done to the v6. As mentioned above, a tuner and solid tune are necessary after installing those 2.

Re: 3.73 or 4.10

Yeah I was quoted about $1000-$1100 to get my car re-geared. I've yet to do any major modifications to my car but I figured this would be a good start and get me more available horsepower throughout the rpm range.

Re: 3.73 or 4.10

Yes you said it correctly too...you don't actually gain hp with gears, but it is better distributed along the powerband. Just remember to get a tuner (SCT or Diablosport) to adjust the ECU after the changes. In addition to these adjustments, you can remove rev/speed limiters, adjust a/f ratios (if necessary), idle rpms, trac control, injector size, and gain some additional hp/tq depending on the aggressiveness of the tune (higher octane).

1100 bucks just for gears and install is 100% a ripoff. Gears are 200 and install can range from 200-400 bucks... so they are charging you double

Yah I thought you meant 1100 for everything...tuner and such...yah that is a ripoff if the place is trying to charge you that much just to install the gears. I don't think it would cost near that to have a Ford dealership do it, and they're probably the most expensive.

I'd definitely look elsewhere...also ask them about setting backlash and pinion length/depth, shimming and the crush sleeve. If they can't give you info about setting those things or appeal to know what your talking about, don't even consider having it done there.

I'd also make sure wherever you take it gives you a written/signed warranty for the work done...you don't want the gears to be whining or grinding and have to bring it back for them to blame it on you and deny fixing it. As it is, most shops will accuse the owner of racing or abusing the new gears and that they aren't liable for any incurred problems.

Don't want the thread to be hijacked, read some of the previous posts in the thread...it basically depends on whether she's driving a ton of highway miles and if she cares about mpgs. If not, go with 4.10's with the manual.

Re: 3.73 or 4.10

Just got back from the local Ford dealer (Freedom Ford) in Edmonton which also happens to be a Ford SVT distributor. When talking to the parts guy he recommended a 3.73 in gear ratio and replacing the entire 7.5 inch rear end with an 8.8 inch rear end. The kit he suggested comes with the 3.73 gears and t-lok differential for about $1400. Have any one else gone this route? Would I have to make any modifications to my drive shaft or brake rotors?

$1400 is a bit pricey...I just looked in my new CJ Pony Parts catalog and they have the 28 spline 8.8" rear with 3.73's for $749.95 plus truck freight shipping. I'd bet it'd still be less than $1400.

If I remember right, it should bolt right up, axles will work fine since it's still 28 spline...the only thing I'm questioning right now is the driveshaft.

Hell, just order everything online...most places ship out of country...some extra shipping fees might apply, but probably well worth it.

I've read somewhere that the driveshaft has to be modified. Everything else is a even swap. Get a price from newtakeoff.com they sell 8.8's also.

That's the problem right there is shipping. Places like American Muscle won't ship to Canada for free, the shipping costs are often pretty substantial.

I think Newtakeoff only offers parts for S197's. I'm not sure if a rear end from one would work in a sn95 or new edge.

Sorry,I thought he was asking about his 09. The S197's have a three link rearend ( panard bar ) they would have to be modified to work in the SN's & new edges.
