Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

I have a '99 ford mustang v6 3.8 and I'm wanting to know how to increase fuel efficiency..

what would be the best bang for the buck mod I could do?

Would a cold air intake help?

modifying your stang will make fuel efficiency worse

just keep your foot off the gas

Not all mods will hurt, for example, underdrive pulleys can actually help gas mileage. I've heard people say that a CAI will help too, although I kinda question that one. If you do a lot of driving in the city and little on the highway, gears can also help slightly.

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

One of the best ways to improve and maintain fuel efficiency is to maintain the car properly. Your car being a 99, I would recommend (if this hasn't been done recently) changing your spark plugs, wires, cleaning your MAF sensor and your TPS sensor (using non-contact electronics cleaner), changing your fuel filter, and running a few over the counter cleaners through the car. Running an injector cleaner through the car periodically will help, at least it helps mine. I do that about every 10k or so.

As far as mods, UDP's will lead to a slight increase in gas mileage, driving with the windows up and no a/c will help if you can stand it. If not, it's better to drive with a/c off and windows down than windows up and a/c on. At least this is what I've observed.

Another little thing is to check and maintain a constant tire pressure in all 4 tires.

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

Dual exhaust may increase MPG slightly too.

Airing up your tires to 35-40psi is important as well. I like to run 40 in the front and 32-35 in the rear.

A special tune that decreases pumping losses can increase mileage by 1-2MPG.

I've observed the opposite, but I'm in a GT. Don't know if that would change anything though. THe windows being open makes your car battle the wind more just going straight.

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

In a v6, the a/c compressor pulls so much that it makes a pretty big difference. At least this is what I've observed.

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

You mean underdrive pulleys lol.
But yeh, the 4.6 has enough power in the rotating mass that it can turn the a/c compressor with minimal parasitic loss in comparison with the v6.

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

underdrive pulleys, exhasut, cold air intake, and a tune can all help gas milage IF You drive the car good and get them to tune the car under non wide open throttle conditions (may take some data logging on your part to get it set right and it will take a VERY good tuner)

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

Replacing spark plugs is one of the easiest things you can do. All you need is a spark plug socket/wrench. Pull the wire off the end, put the socket on the plug, and take it out. Put the new plug in, plug the wire back on, and you're done.

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

Most bolt ons actually help gas efficiency. My turbo actually helps highway efficiency, but if I use boost (or if you use the power that comes from the bolt ons) your mileage goes to poopy.

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

the KEY to spark plugs is taking your time and NOT CROSS THREADING THE PLUGS, using a bit of antiseeze on the threads and tightening them correctly. A ratchet, couple extensions varying in lengths and a spark plug stocket work fine, take one plug wire off remove the plug put a new plug in and put the wire back on. Dont take of all the wires at once or you wont know which order they go in. Check the spark plug gap and set all of them correctly, I am not sure what yours will need to be adn you can not go by the stock ones in the car.

If the gap is the same as a 2000, the gap is .52-.56.

Re: Want to Increase Gas Efficiency

I get around 28 mpg highway with a full weighted car, including subs and the rest of my crap. Gotta love the 87 mpg tune from justin at vmp. Now if I can just stay off the little right pedal in town...

The 03-04 Cobra's around here who tune at Amazon are using the Metco pulley's and Metco CAI it does not have a bend which seems to be a problem with the 03-04 MAF

YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT METCO!!!!! What you end up buying is up to you but they are having very good success and several 03/04 Cobra's in the UMC club are at 460hp+ and have not gotten into the engine at all. All bolt ons and a Amazon tune

He sells a lot of drugs around here. He's probably one of the biggest coke dealers in the Southeast.
