Power Steering Rack Complications?

First off, Happy Easter everyone!

Now, I had got word that I might have to drop my transmission in order to install a new power steering rack. Is this true? I really dont want to have to pay a mechanic to install it if I dont have to. But disconnecting the transmission is not something I can do...

I cant say for sure but i dont see why you would need to drop the transmission to install the power steering rack. Maybe on a FWD car.

Re: Power Steering Rack Complications?

Absolutely not on a mustang.. they're readily accessible front, rear and top

Tie rod ends might be a pain depending on rack/location (rust belt = hard) but for the most part.. It's straight foward

Biggest concern is, be sure to lock the steering wheel, you don't want it to spin around freely with the rack disengaged - itll kill your clockspring (steering wheel switches, horn and airbag wires)

Re: Power Steering Rack Complications?

Oh and I guess the bigger question is, why do you need to replace the rack?

Is it leaking into the boot?

It's leaking everywhere. I have to fill the resevior atleast two-three times a day. I've been going through power steering fluid like crazy. Even that super thick Lucas power steering repair fluid leaks out in about a day. I went through a whole huge $20 bottle of it.
