Re: Help make my mustang faster

Well the 20 inch rims aren't helping you

How much you got to spend. There are many different things you can do to get more power.

Cv = Convertible Mustang? 2004? Wrong forum....

What size engine do you have? 3.8 4.6?

Re: Help make my mustang faster

I take it from his avatar... he has a v-6 (side scoops). Also, you're gonna need quite a bit of work to catch up to GT levels. You'd need a decent amount of engine work... we're talking all the bolt ons, including exhaust, a tuner, and maybe a little more...

If you're looking to catch him cheaply and quickly... gears and NOS.

NAWWWSSSS, but serious, your car can easily take a 75 shot safely. if you want power all the time i suggest a procharger or a vortect, the procharger builds about 310 to the wheels.

Re: Help make my mustang faster

the GTs in those years run low 14s stock, not amazing but you will need to shave off two seconds or more to be in that range. It can be done but it will not be done cheap. You will have to add a power adder (supercharger/turbocharger) or build the motor~ you can do a good bit with just bolt ons and gears but dont expect to shave off more than a second from your car if that.

Re: Help make my mustang faster

the air intake will net you MAXIMUM of 5 horsepower... more likely only 2. So, that puts you at 195 horsepower... and the GT still at 260, if it's stock. You're 65 horsepower in the hole, not to mention the torque. You will need a lot more than bolt ons. If you have an automatic, 4.10 gears, manual... 3.73. Those will help out a lot... but not enough yet to catch the GT power. That's why if your ONLY goal is to beat him... you get a small shot of NOS. The NOS and the gears will allow you to beat him... assuming he's stock.

also, you should click "rate my post", and give me a cube.. as I only need one more to get 2 green cubes on the side

the only bad thing about gears, is that if you get them, in order for a correct speedo, you 'need' a tuner to recalibrate your speedo.

You can get a complete gear kit from Mustang Parts - Mustang Tuning .com - Mustang Wheels, Mustang Exhaust, Mustang Performance Parts, Mustang Accessories, which includes the gears and the tuner, and the rear oil for $540 shipped... you don't HAVE to get the tuner, but it helps. Then, install, which I think was around $200?

NOS, on the other hand... I'm not 100% sure on, cause I wouldn't put it on my car... but I think the install is pretty straight forward, you should be able to do it yourself. I don't know pricing on NOS kits, but it shouldn't cost you what the gears would... and, if you run a big enough shot, you wouldn't need gears at all. A 75 shot might put you near the same speed as the GT.

NOS really isn't all that hard to install... I hear they provide very good instructions. (little cube appreciated ... guess I have to wait for Brent to "ok" it.)

Re: Help make my mustang faster

get rid of the 20s (ur never going to get any speed out of tires that big--plus they probably weigh way too freakin much) and get urself tuned, maybe turbo/supercharge it at some point (make sure u have ur engine prepared for something like that though)

Re: Help make my mustang faster

I'd have to get back up with him, but I believe he was asking 1500, and you would need a new mounting bracket and I dunno that it includes a belt. Along with that, you will need a good tune, which won't be cheap. Before supercharging though, I think it's always better to build the engine. If you're looking for something cheap and easy to make you fast, it doesn't exist.

Re: Help make my mustang faster

Haha, mine's fairly stock. Nothing major done.

I wouldn't recommend getting a generic chip at all though, you will see minimal gains if any and risk damaging the car if the tune is not correct. vmptuning.com , a site sponsor, does a very good job at tuning and uses the SCT system. I have a Xcalibrator 2 from them with 3 tunes on it and enjoy it alot.

Re: Help make my mustang faster

before you dive into the world of modification I would recomend hanging around reading up and getting familiar with the car and the work it takes to own a moded car. Its not just the price of the mod and you are done, there are upkeep costs and potential future problems and risks you have to accept before you should mod a car or decide how far into the moding of a vehicle you are willing to go.

Re: Help make my mustang faster

whats gonna happen though when lets say you do get close to your friends GT speed and he decides to mod his and then you spent a lot of money and are still behind him?

id do an engine swap. some companies out there offer complete cobra 4.6L engine assemblies with Tremec trannies, headers, exhaust, wiring harnesses, etc for around 6000.00 that would get you 320hp

You could nearly get a v6 to 300 hp with 6000 dollars and a little innovation.

anytime you sink money into a car its a money pit with out much hope of a return on the investment. You just need to decide what money pit to start with lol

Eh. Not to great of an idea. say you buy a V6 for $7 grand, (got mine for $6900) and you spend another $6 grand to swap out the tranny, engine, suspension parts and what not. adds up to about $13,000 dollars. Ive seen very nice 5spd GTs around here going for $8 to $10 grand. So your $3,000 dollars in the hole. Which could lead to a purchase of a nice GT for $9,000 and have $4 grand to play with.

Re: Help make my mustang faster

great points although mostly true. he could be like me and got his mustang for free so the 6000 investment would be real affordable if chosen to do. myself, my v6 is a daily driver and just for fun not to race with. so im not big into dropping too much money into it. just enough to have some fun with.

yeah, you start out in the hole even more by having the non-split port. Poor kid. I'm amazingly happy that I went up to the GT... like extremely happy.

You could sell your 20" rims and buy some smaller ones... say 17" and you will have some money left over for other mods, plus you remove a whole lot of weight.
