Talking new here and got an exhaust question

hey guys, I'm new on the site. My name is Lesly and I have a 2004 V6 mustang. I'm about to get an exhaust put on my car. They way my set up is going to be is a gt tak off (off of a friend's gt), MAC offroad h-pipe, and possibly MAC mufflers. I just want to see what everyone's take on the sound it will produce. I am trying to go after that nice loud roaring kinda sound (close to a v8 as much as I can) and clearly far away from a ricey sound. Thanks for the help.

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

Welcome,

GT take off's are a pretty good option~
especially if you're getting the friend discount.

MAC headers will be good, but wont really give you great gains for the price IMO. Headers on our cars will only get you about 2-3hp. As for mufflers, have you looked into Spintech's or dynomax's? Magnaflow also makes good performance muffler with good sound.

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

yea the friend discount was awesome (free). lol

I was leaning towards MAC b/c of a good discount I can get with them. But I was looking on Mustangexhaust.com and I listened to a sound clip that have the o/r h-pipe and with warlock mufflers and it was on a v6. It sounded real close to the sound I'm trying to achieve. I've looked into Spintech's but not yet dynomax. I am debating with Magnaflow as well. I just want to get the right one that I will be happy with the sound.

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

All those will sound nice at low RPMs and at idle, but it's the higher rpms that seem to be unavoidably "ricey". You will still have that problem no matter it seems unless you do some engine work~

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

yea that's what I've been reading and it does suck. lol. I am going to be doing some major engine work in the near future so I guess I'll just have to suffer till then. lmao. One more question the gt take off's are 2.25 or 2.5?

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

what year GT are they off of?
Most were 2.25" but that is plenty big for most V6's according to dad:

good place to start

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

If you buy a v6 off road H pipe you should be able to bolt up everything with out much hassel. I would not put headers on as they dont do much of anything.

No cats on a v6 sounds loud and high pitched, some like it some dont so get soem videos of the car reving and driving down the road to determine if you like it.

use 2.25 inch pipe only no bigger no smaller. Try to ONLY use stainless steel if possible as well.. and for exhasut tips (if you need them) only stainless steel polished, no chrome as it rusts very very fast.

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

very kool, you guys are great help. tonystang, thanks for the link. I was looking at it and definately will help my process. I am already on that way already. Also my GT take off are from a 2002 GT. Thanks again guys. You can count on me being around the site.

One more thing (sorry I'm still learning ) What do you all think would be better: Keep the cats and weld them to the o/r h-pipe or leave them off?

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

No I just found you can't. I'm just going to take the cats off and put the o/r h-pipe on.

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

this is true, leave the cats. You can buy an adaptor from steeda or pacesetter or get a shot to fab one up~ Its best if you can bolt and unbolt the exhaust though when they are done.

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

like they said really leave the cats, ive never heard a stock v6 i liked w/o the cats, it just sounds like crap and i really dont think its gonna give you the sound you want. I have heard magnaflow in person, its not that loud but it has a very nice sound to it..

Re: new here and got an exhaust question

I have no cats, but I am a special case, and if it does sound like crap, the wastegate drowns it out anyway.

But I would second that motion, no cats sounds like crap if you dont have a lot of work done~

Hey, welcome aboard! About mufflers, I have Magna flow muffler....they are not a loud as some out there, but the sound I get form them is quality and I get a lot of complements on the sound. I ca try and get a sound clip if you would like.
