Question supercharger worth it?

before moving into gettin a gt - id like to make my v6 a badass v6... since the car is already mine, its in good condition and all... its a 2000 w/ 85k miles.

i want to install a supercharger but im not sure whether its worth it to spend all that money into getting one. im not so much about the nitrous either...

thoughts? ideas?
GRACIAS!

Re: supercharger worth it?

Ok, do you want to spend 5k out of pocket just for the charger system or piece it together yourself? Also, what kind of numbers are you wanting? Either way, if you boost it, I'd recommend going with a forged bottom end and a P&P top end to get everything out of the sixer. Word of the wise, though, **** will break when you throw forced induction into the mix, so be weary of that. Also, you'll be out at least 2k just for the forged bottom end. I'm not trying to scare you away, if this is what you want to do, then by all means hammer on it. I'm just letting you know what's ahead of you if you do plan to boost it. Here's some links to let you know what I'm talking about:

Re: supercharger worth it?

Yeah, I would suggest either an 8.8 rear end or at least a Tlok. A different clutch (if you have a manua).

Like a procharger? Sure, if you've got 5k to spend on one.

Re: supercharger worth it?

oh boy here we go again. to the op, youre fine with just the blower. run no more than 9psi on a conservative tune. the tune is the key here. is it gonna be a track car or just a peppy street car? if your not going to the track and you can control yourself, you dont need an 8.8. however its not a bad idea if you can find a junkyard one. a nice used vortech can be had for 1500 for a complete kit and rebuilt if absolutely necessary. it all depends on how you plan to use the car. you simply cannot putting the pedal to the floor every time. any suspension is also optional for the street. i understand where your coming from as i was thinking about the same thing for my 6 until i can get my shelby.

however, i wouldnt even think about dropping 5k on a brand new one, nor forged internals. if you must go to that extreme then just keep your car the way it is.

Re: supercharger worth it?

Yah I agree...I wouldn't dump a ton of money into the v6, at least right away. Wait until you get that v8 and then decide. You may decide to dump the money into the v8 first, since you have a better platform and the gains are better. You could make the v6 a nice project car...piecing it together as cash and time allows.

Really it's up to you. You can just buy a supercharger, slap it on and run the car. If you don't drive the car a ton that'd probably be the better way to go.

Anytime you run boost on an engine it's going to greaten the chance of something failing...as simple as that. But as said above, a proper tune is key.

Re: supercharger worth it?

Right, obviously its gonna put more strain on the engine. But there is nothing wrong with 275rwhp. Our engines are good up to about 350rwhp or so. When your just driving normal, you wont even be in the boost range. Id also agree that it is money that can be spent on the gt. I mean you could just use that money and buy a blower for the gt and make a ton more hp. Also, are you looking for a new gt or a used one? Because you could get a used on for the price of a new blower by the time you pay for install and tune. I think Ill end up leaving my engine, tranny, and rear as is and just fix the dents and dings on my car. If it is running good, then why mess with it? Id rather a more fuel efficient dd anyways.

on a side note, gt's arent even all that fast. i rode in a friend of mine's 05 with full bolt-ons and 5-speed and it didnt even pin me in the seat.

Re: supercharger worth it?

ha, we'll start a collection fund for your keychain here at ME.

I would definitely be content with the stock performance of the GT500...for a while anyways, the mod bug would hit eventually, as it always does

Re: supercharger worth it?

Oh that'll be fun learning to drive stick on...the 1st manual car I drove was an 04
Mach 1...that was an experience. Guy was crazy for letting me drive it, I did pretty well for a first timer, didn't stall it at all.

well he still hasnt stated his intentions. imo it would only be worth it with a used blower. vortechs go for 1500 all the time for the complete kit.

IMHO, why the hell would you spend that much money just to get 300? Just getting a supercharger without supporting mods is like putting an elevator in a ****house.

um, 100hp for 1500 is pretty good bang for the buck in my opinion

Re: supercharger worth it?

Yes, but then what happens when he blows the motor? That's another 1700. It's better to spend the money and upgrade the engine and rear end with supporting mods than to just slap a s/c on a stock engine.

I was just ****in around man...I agree with you for the most part...better safe than sorry. But it is possible to just slap on the supercharger, many have done it and have been fine...you just can't put the hammer down every time you get in the car...the supercharger is more of a "I have one" in that case rather than for putting down some serious numbers at the track.

Re: supercharger worth it?

hey why dont i get a thanks? if you run the supercharger the right way, there is nothing wrong with doing so. we dont all have the money for a built engine and you can always get a nice used one for under a grand if yours blows. and he would have a spare car in the mean time.

That looks like it would make for a fun project car. Floor pans and body moldings/parts are abundant for the 67-68's, so acquiring parts wouldn't be difficult. Definitely check out the inner fender and trunk area of the car. Those are common rust points that tend to go first on cars. Definitely check the underside for serious rust and frame damage. You wouldn't want to find yourself getting into a project spending more money and time than you planned.
