There must be something I'm not grokking... If it were beefier, why wouldn't affect the drivetrain? The engine would have to turn more mass, no?

the rear end it self is bigger. the gears are only slightly bigger. the carrier (pumpkin) is the larger and beefier. things turning arent big enough to cause anymore drivetrain loss.

just think.. the thing the differential and gears are located in, is what's thicker metal. causing heavier and sturdier. not the axles or things that turn

I understand that the shafts are identical and that the axle housing does not contribute to the turning mass.
I was stating a hypothetical situation, where the axle shafts were indeed larger diameter. I had taken (perhaps incorrectly) the statement "even if they were beefier, it wouldnt effect drivetrain, just weight" to mean that you had meant that adding mass to the turning parts (ie: axleshafts) would not affect drivetrain losses.
That was what didn't make sense to me.

axle shafts are the parts that house the axles. they dont spin. just the axles.

the same exact axles are used in GTs and V6s.. 28 spline. you can take a V6s and put it in a GT and will work.

that is how the axles shafts can be larger and not cause a loss

Have to correct you there, monkey. The axle housing is the part that don't move; axle shafts are the the axles, and do spin.

well, i was brought up calling the thing that holds the axles the shafts. so thats the terminolgy i use.

plus in your words... the shafts are part of the axles. since i have said repeatidly that the whole axles are interchangeable, and the same size, you should have picked up on what i was saying

truce as long as we both realize the 8.8 is just heavier metal, not heavier spinning components

Go to a different dealer for service, don't let a dealer install the gears, they will charge you a fortune. Don't tell them they are in there, unless they drive the car, they will never know it.
