4.10 gear question

I called my ford racing shop nearby today, and asked about the 4.10`s. They told me not to get them because in a few year they will kill my drivetrain. At most go to 3.73, even though I have an Auto. Anyone have experance with this?thanks for any input

My dad has a 97 Ranger with the 4.0 and heavy duty haul kit. I drove it when I went home this summer and it kicks butt. Those gears make a hell of a difference.

I would suggest everyone get a tranny cooler. It is a good thing to have and promotes good tranny health

i had an 8.8 with 4.10s and had it a while. bought it used and then sold it. hasnt have problems with any of the cars. heck, if i didnt have a pre99 (so i could have gotten a chip for correcting the speedo instead of the speedogear), i would have gotten 4.30s

and yes, tranny coolers are great. you dont need them with the gears, but it would help prolong the life anyway

If it's a Ford [Motorsport] part, installed by Ford techs, would it really void the warranty?

It'll kill your drivetrain warranty MOST LIKELY.

You'll probably drive around with a lead foot now but different gear ratios don't adversely affect your engine. You can still drive just like you did before and get about the same gas mileage (in town, not on hwy). You just end up shifting more often.

4.10 add no stress to your engine.
Your driving habits after you get them may add stress .

I guess that is thier concern.

dont forget, they will make your engine about 500rpms higher at all speeds. maybe that is what they are thinking of.

but they are fine for daily driving. get them, tell the mechanic to do it, the customer is always right, and then thank us on the board :thumb2:

dude, you need to draw a vertical line on your forehead. Then draw a line to your left at the bottom of the vertical line. Then go show some girls.

Just kidding, I heard the evo's are pretty sweet.

mkiv supras are all used and modded to hell with like 80k miles and still expensive. new supras are prolly not going to be that fast. wont know until tomorrow or thursday when the Tokyo Auto Show unveils the new one.

but lets stay on topic

(wiser peeps correct where needed)
If you're never gonna do much to the car, I should think you'd be better off with the 7.5. It'll handle what you have now, and a bit more. Also, it's less mass for your engine to drive, so drivetrain losses would be less than if you went with a 8.8. But, if you can get the right 8.8 for cheap, I'd get that instead.

really close Blue..... but......

youre right about the 7.5. it can handle supposedly up to 300rwhp. its not a weak rear end. but it is a tempermental one. i have broken one with just a couple bolt-ons and i have seen them hold up to high rpm clutch drop on slicks with a 100shot of nitrous. just depends if its in a good mood or not.

if youre just getting a couple bolt-ons and dont race it much, stick with the 7.5.

as for the weight thing.. the extra weight (less than 20lbs technically w/o the bearings and such) is just metal. it has no effect on parasitic loss of the drivetrain. the actual parts are the same size and weight

So the axleshafts are identical? Then what's the point of the extra inch? Larger/stouter differential?

yeah, the differential is larger. axle shafts are the same cause GTs and v6's have the same axles.

even if they were beefier, it wouldnt effect drivetrain, just weight.
