Question Transmission Repair cost

Hi, I live in the topeka area and I am looking at a 2002 Mustang v6 auto. I received a e-mail from the owner of the mustang saying that he went to start the car and the transmission "dropped". I'm not to shavy at car language so I would like to know what that means. Could I also get some price estimates of how much a new transmission would cost plus labor? Thanks.

Re: Transmission Repair cost

well you need to get a lot more info on the trans. problem. there is no telling what wrong with the trans from that explanation.

Re: Transmission Repair cost

I have no clue as well. It might need an entire new trans. He said it was running a month ago but it suddenly stopped shifting gears. He thinks it may be a loose cable.

Re: Transmission Repair cost

Yah definitely have a professional take a look at it and do a diagnostic on the unit.

You can find 4R70W's relatively cheap these days...units with low miles. But that's a worse case scenario, it's worth it to have someone take a look at it and give you an idea of what's wrong and the cost to fix it.

Don't even think about buying the car until you find out what's wrong with it...and you shouldn't be covering the bill either.

Yeah.. What does he mean by dropped? Sounds fishy to me. There is a million things that could go wrong with transmissions. Just don't go to

when it comes to transmissions... rebuilds sometimes go great and other times they simply dont... and 90% of the time when they dont they wont be covered under warranty and you will end up spending twice as much to get it to where you could have been to just buy a new transmission (ore refurbed one from ford)... just something to think about.

Very good point...friend of mine had his taurus' transmission rebuilt twice...the first time the shop botched the rebuild and didn't even tighten down bolts to specs.

He paid 4000 for the car and spend almost 2800 on the rebuilds. Would've been a lot better to have just replaced the transmission the first time.
