Re: buying new mustang need advice.

if it was 99-04 body style get an 03/04 cobra or 03/04 mach 1. The 03/04 cobra has the best bang for the buck power wise by FAR (20k for a GREAT 03/04 cobra) but the 03/04 mach 1's are great cars (14-16k for a great mach 1)

03/04 cobra 425hp stick (under rated at 390) and easy to take from 360rwhp stock to 600rwp (500 with using the stock blower). Mach 1's have a bit over 300hp and are much much harder to get much more out of.

For 05+ its either the 300hp gt or for 30k a GT500.

Re: buying new mustang need advice.

Yah definitely go Mach 1 or Cobra if you're looking for bang for the buck.

Keep in mind that both of those cars are more expensive to own compared to a same year GT. Both require premium gas in stock form (even higher if you're tuned for a higher octane), and insurance will probably be higher for either car if you're under 25.

Not trying to deter you from either, but they are better weekend/cruiser cars than dd's imo...plus you'll really tack on miles and the the value of the car will decline substantially so keep that in mind as well.

A manual 01-04 GT wouldn't be a horrible buy...certainly not as fast or mod friendly as a cobra, but you still get 8 cylinders and decent mpgs. A better dd pick imo. You can throw some mods on and still have some fun...

If you aren't attached to the 03/04 new edge body style you could go with an 05+ GT...300 hp at the crank...and the 3v 4.6L...of course there's a huge market for mods and the gains are better than the previous 2v 4.6L's.

You have some options...it also depends on how much you want to spend...01-04 GT's in decent form can be had for under 10k, while cobras will run from 16k to +20k depending on condition and miles. Keep in mind mods are also more expensive for Mach 1's and Cobras compared to the GT's.

Re: buying new mustang need advice.

i would love to have a cobra or a mach 1. but sonicpony is right. i will just tack on miles. i was thinking of an 03-09 gt. the cobra will have to wait till retirement when i have the time to really keep her shining. i drive them hard and puch the corners.

so what advice for a GT could you give me?

If cornering is a big deal, then you want an 05+ GT S197 platform as it far outhandles the SN95 chassis...it's night & day difference between the two...Although the S197's are heavier, they are a lot more balanced and get the power down better...

That being said, I would imagine you can get a decent mileage 05-06GT for $13-15K, maybe less...

Re: buying new mustang need advice.

05+ GT is the only one I would consider if a GT is what you want, it is only 300hp which is kind sad for 2005 but the mods you can put on it will raise it up from 260rwhp stock to 300-320 (in manual trans) so thats not to horrible, still about 50rwhp why of a stock 03 cobra but... its your choice. (insurance on my car is QUITE cheap actually)

Re: buying new mustang need advice.

Yah really the S197 is the better platform for handling and corner carving...the suspension is engineered much better (even though there is still a ton of room for improvement).

But there are a few 99-04 GT's out there that can hold there own in the turns, ask Darkshadows...hell I think you'll be happy with either car...the difference in sound/performance/feel from your current v6 will astound you.

Re: buying new mustang need advice.

I would say 2005-2011 Stang is worth every dollar. Right now the incentives on the 2010 mustangs are crazy they want to get rid of their stock to make rooms for the 2011's Hope that helps
