Re: Do Octane boosters work????

In a word no.

The only one that is any good it Lucas brand but it only bumps it up by one or two points.

Re: Do Octane boosters work????

Yup.. they work ... they clog fuel filters and foul spark plugs very quickly ...

When an octane booster says it can boost your fuel's octane by 4 - 5 points that just means your 93 octane fuel will be raised up to 93.5 at best.... Not worth it if ya ask me...

Re: Do Octane boosters work????

There are 2 that I know of that work. Octanium and torco. But those aren't really boosters. Those are concentrated race gas.

Re: Do Octane boosters work????

My thought is higher octane, higher SCT tune, better performance... does that make since? Or am I way off? I mean where Im at 91 octane is the highest octane you can buy at a gas station and ordering higher octane gas every time I need a fill up seems silly...I thought maybe this could be the answer...I was thinking Lucas, if that matters...any thoughts??

Re: Do Octane boosters work????

Nope theres not going to be enough performance difference to justify the cost. High octane is used for engines that have more timing, high compression, N2O, or boost. It keeps the engine from spark knocking or pinging how ever you want to say it.
The octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine. Knocking can damage an engine, so it is not something you want to have happening. Lower-octane gas (like "regular" 87-octane gasoline) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting.

The compression ratio of your engine determines the octane rating of the gas you must use in the car. One way to increase the horsepower of an engine of a given displacement is to increase its compression ratio. So a "high-performance engine" has a higher compression ratio and requires higher-octane fuel. The advantage of a high compression ratio is that it gives your engine a higher horsepower rating for a given engine weight -- that is what makes the engine "high performance." The disadvantage is that the gasoline for your engine costs more.

Re: Do Octane boosters work????

nope. they change your octane by like .10 or a .010. Now, if you buy a whole case of them, maybe. :}

They say Lucas works better than most, but dont rely on them at all as they wont do much of anything.

Re: Do Octane boosters work????

For what its worth, I've tried the off the shelf 91 octane tune from SCT in my rustang..

It had really bad spark knock on tip-in and in third gear at WOT it was audible..

A bottle of lucas completely cured it (half tank of 91)

Of course the proper way to do it would be tune it out.. Which I plan to do in a few weeks

But IMO if there's no spark knock, you don't need octane booster

Re: Do Octane boosters work????

We used to have 94 octane at Sunoco in Vermont. Back in the good old days.

Impossible to find.. and the 91 octane we get is oxygenated.. It's lame as $!@*

But as mentioned before, my spark knock issues on the 91 octane tune vanished using lucas octane booster, not sure what that's worth..
