Exclamation Needing help with 2002 mustang belt tensioner/pulley.

I had to buy a new alternator yesterday, we are having problems with loosening the belt pulley/tensioner. I can't seen to find any clear photos of where it is exactly (or they show different engines from other cars). I've read that you're supposed to insert something into this square hole and try to loosen it that way, other things I've read is that that part isn't supposed to move, you're supposed to unscrew something. Could anybody post specific directions on how to do this? Photos would also be very helpful since we aren't too familiar with motors.

No do not put anything into that square hole.....thats all a bunch of crap as I had to do this to my 2002 a while back. On the Belt tensioner pulley itself you should be able to fit a large socket over it and attach your torque wrench or breaker bar (they will give you this tool at autozone for a deposit on a credit card...no charge). Next is easy, but i suggest you have a friend help with the install. Turn the belt tensioner pulley/bolt counter clockwise and you will see that the belt loosens quickly. Slip it off the alternator and then disconnect it. Put the new one on and bolt it in. Then same thing. counter clockwise and slip the belt back over the alternator's pulley (this is where it is helpful to have two sets of hands). Have your buddy put the alternator on while you use the breaker bar and release the tension from the belt.

Re: Needing help with 2002 mustang belt tensioner/pulley.

Would you happen to have any luck finding pictures of a 02 v6 engine online? So I know where exactly the pulley is? I thought it was that square hole, but I guess not. I do have a friend and his dad helping but, none of us really know much about cars. If I had spare money I would take it to get it done at a mechanic, but alas I'm unemployed at the moment. Thank you so much in advance.

....actually come to think of it. I think it is clockwise. Not 100% sure, but it makes more sense to be clockwise because the pulley bolt will loosen if you go counterclockwise. Either way thats how you do it.
good luck.

Re: Needing help with 2002 mustang belt tensioner/pulley.

the belt tensioner is the pulley that is located underneath the a/c compressor. it has a little lever attached to it, but all you need to do is get a socket around the pulley bolt and turn it one way and the tension will release. You'll see once you get the socket on it.

I sent a PM with photos, I could post them here also.

I circled the thing in red, we put the thing in there and try to turn it, thing is I don't know if it's the right thing or not.

Re: Needing help with 2002 mustang belt tensioner/pulley.

Hey dude, look I just went out to my car and did it with a rachet. Here is what you do. Step 1: Take a large rachet/torqure wrench/breaker bar and attach a 18mm socket to it. Step 2: Put on pulley. Step 3: turn pulley counter-clockwise like I originally said. Step 4 (while one person applies the force to the pulley, have the other person take the belt and slip it over the alternator pulley). It's that easy.
Check out the pic below to make sure your putting the rachet on the right bolt.

my tensioner takes two people to do it with the least chance of harm.. due to its backwards.

No problem man. I know the Hayne's manual did a ****ty job of explaining this and your right spec as it does require some brute strength to turn the tensioner. Definitely a bicept work out and requires at least 2 ppl that way someone can grab a hold of the belt and slip it over the alternator while the other applies the elbow grease. Glad it worked out for ya.

I know this thread was started years ago, but it helped me figure something out just yesterday. So I wanted to clear things up a little bit, as a Thank You contribution. I had to replace my alternator on my 02 V6 also. So I needed to release the tension on the serpentine belt. So I searched all over, specifically using the term "2002 V6 Mustang" and I kept finding people saying to stick the square end of a ratchet, into the base of the belt tension bracket. The problem was, nobody could agree as to what size ratchet. Most would say a 3/8", but I also found some saying to use a 1/2", and even others said use 1/4" ratchet. The truth is, all these people must be referring to a GT V8. I assume (by majority) in that instance, a 3/8" would be the correct wrench, but in the V6, it is totally different. That hole, in the center of the tensioner bracket base, in a 02 V6, is actually a 5/16" HEX. I was able to perfectly fit a 5/16" allen key into it, but you CANNOT use it to release the tension on the belt. IT WILL NOT WORK on an 02 V6.
runvsofthisbull above, had it right. In an 02 V6 you use a 18mm socket, on a ratchet wrench, and you place it on the "BOLT", which holds the pulley, NOT in the hole, in the base of the tensioner bracket, and you push counter-clockwise (from the battery side to the air cleaner side). It is easier, if you first remove the one hex head screw, from the top of the plastic radiator overflow bottle, and move it to the right, out of the way first. Also, if you place a 3/4"to 1" x 2' (foot) pipe on the end of your ratchet wrench, or even better, use a breaker bar, You can do it all by yourself. You can push the bar, releasing the tension, with your left hand and slip the belt off, with your right. That is how I did it, and it was very easy. While you're at it, you should wire brush, or sand paper both battery posts, and wire terminals clean. And spray them with a battery cleaner spray, since this is the first place where corrosion and battery problems usually start.

No worries glad I could help out future ppl. Did a 2005 GT alternator about a year ago and what a PITA compared to this one...you have to take off the throttle body to access it.
