Wanted: horsepower

Ive done a few upgrades to my 99 V6 mustang: AM cold air intake, msd wires, materflow muffler and it goes on. SO i was wondering what are other things could i do to increase my pony's power and potential, anything that wont kill my wallet is what i mean. I heard of diablo tuners and performance chips i dont know whats better or more potential though. thanks for the input

Re: Wanted: horsepower

Tuner's are a very good option for a lot of things like RPM limiter, shift points, and fuel/air ratio. I would go with one of them except there quite expensive in most cases.

And to be more specific, an LS1 or a 4valve v8 if you decide to go that way.

who does everyone over look the power potential of a 2V im mean sure a 4V flows better but a 2V is a solid power maker

why spend more money, when you could start with a better base to get the same of not better results.

Nothing cheap about adding horsepower! Go to a movie And buy dinner!
Gears would make it more fun for you and Tuner would help good luck

I would think 3.73 do the trick... you will be able to spin the tires faster...

Re: Wanted: horsepower

yeah ive heard that 4.10 is where you want to go the thing about these gear mods is that lets say if you put the 4.10 you get better take off time and acceleration BUT your top speed goes down so there is a good and a bad part.

Top speed doesnt really go down. Youre speedometer only goes to 120 anyway and Ive done that when I had the 4.10's. It'll definately rev higher. And have fun with gas mileage going 80mph at 3k rpm. Im glad I had mine taken out after putting over 7k miles on my car this summer.

Id say go with a tuner. I notice a pretty big difference when I ride with the tune on vs off.

This should give you an idea of RPMS at certain speeds and what different gears will do to you.

Also, please understand this is theoretically. It does not take into affect variables such as wind direction, vehicle weight, aerodynamics, road slope, and ect. ect. ect. Your true speed will not be exact.

Dumb question but why do u need to go faster than 120. U can but u wont be able to tell on your speedometer. Not to mention how obnoxious it was driving over an hour at 3k rpm with my exhaust

There is nothing wrong with the 2V's. I have almost 250k on mine and it doesn't miss a beat, even while running 10.1 compression for almost 3 years. It's just the aftermarket communities embraced the 4V alot quicker than the redheaded 2V, especially when the Non-PI motors were in production. But Lately there are more aftermarket companies making parts for the 2V like the new Trickflow heads, etc that is making the 2V more fun to play with.

Before he spent the money to upgrade to a 2v and buy trick flow heads, he could be running bottom 12s in his v6.

Re: Wanted: horsepower

Why the hell do the mod motor guys come to a V6 forum to answer "how do I get more power from my 6" with the ultra intelligent "swap to a V8"? If he wanted to swap to a V8, he would. How do these responses answer the posters questions?

If you want the best of both worlds, try 3.55s instead of 3.73's or higher. I swapped a 3.27 8.8 from a GT into my bro's 94 V6 maual car and noticed a decent improvement in accelertion and improved fuel economy. The car accelerates easier thus requiring less effort from the motor.

At the same time, add an aluminum driveshaft. Doesn't add horsepower but reduces parasitic loss by 10 hp and the end result is those 10 extra ponies at the wheels.

A tuner will add about the same and will also allow you to kill the rev limiter if you wish to go faster than 120. If you add other mods down the road (ported heads, intakes, cam etc.), it will allow you to tune for that.

Underdrive pullies if you don't have them and an intake spacer are cheap power gains.

I vote gears. 4.10 for auto, 3.73 for manual. Add in a tune afterward.

Re: Wanted: horsepower

my 01 v6 (manual) had

UD pulley
Mac CAI
3.73 gears/tloc
Alum Driveshaft

made it a little quicker at about .5 off my times~ not to bad overall. I highly doubt 10rwhp on a alum flywheel due to its only 10lbs ligher, but its like taking 100lbs off the car. Now on newer 05+ cars the driveshaft is MUCH heavier (my stocker was 25lbs alum was 15)

Re: Wanted: horsepower

I would agree with flex but don't go higher then 3.73 in gears you will be happier with driving it long distances. Also Diablo Sport Preditor is a great tunner, long tube headers and flowmaster cat back with H pipe. If you really want power save the money and Procharger it costs but give you great HP gains.

Re: Wanted: horsepower

if your on a budget i would go cold air intake, dual cats, lsd, bigger throttle body, diablo tunner. those are about the cheapest things thatll add horses.
