Exhaust. 1999 3.8L V6.

I have a 1999 3.8L V6. Is there a easy way to make my exhuast sound better. I want it to be alot louder and sound meaner. But I don't wanna just punch a hole in the muffler. Any sort of exhuast i can get to make my V6 sound like a V8?

No, there is no exhaust that is going to increase your number of cylinders.

Many have gone with flowmasters to get a deeper sound but you will never make your car sound like a v8 without getting a v8. There are a lot of videos on youtube of various v6's with different exhaust setups. That will give you a good idea of direction to go.

Re: Exhaust. 1999 3.8L V6.

As said, it is impossible to get the v8 sound...v8's are odd firing and our v6's are even firing.

Common saying here is flowmaster 40's, delta 40's or super 44's etc. with an off road h-pipe (no cats) and long tube headers make for the best sound on a v6. The idle and lower rpms will sound really good, but above 2500 rpms you will probably hear drone and the natural high pitchness of the v6 will come out.

As said, go on youtube, listen to some clips, try and hear some other v6 stangs in person, that is the best way to get an idea of what you'd like.

Re: Exhaust. 1999 3.8L V6.

There are many different ways to do exhaust on the v6 as well. You can buy a y-pipe "bolt on" system...this is probably the easiest way but the sound/performance won't be the same or as good.

You can buy the Pacesetter h-pipe adapter and bolt up any GT/Solid Rear Axle v8 exhaust. You'll probably need a passenger exhaust hangar if the system/takeoff doesn't have one.

Or you can have a shop custom fab some piping. They can run piping after the cats to stay emissions legal (if they check emissions where you live) or you can have pipes ran from the headers eliminating the cats (pretty sure an exhaust shop won't cut off cats).

You could try and pick up a GT takeoff exhaust kit...this system retains 2.25" stock piping compared to most aftermarket systems which are 2.5" mandrel bent.

If the GT mufflers aren't your cup of tea, you could always have a shop swap in some mufflers of your choice.

Don't expect hp/tq gains to be outrageous as some exhaust companies will claim. Expect 5-15hp tops based on how much of the exhaust you replace. It's mainly for sound, the added performance is a bonus.

Okay. But if i straight pipe it, it won't sound like a stupid ricer will it? I want a musclely and louder sound out of my V6.

If you get long tubes and an o/r h-pipe, it'll sound good. You could get away with just the o/r h-pipe, but the deepness will come from the headers.

Keeping the cats will probably be the best option, since a quieter, mellow v6 sounds the best. But it will be quiet.

Also, stick with chambered mufflers. Straight thru mufflers will make the car sound ricey and high pitched. Flowmasters, Pypes Street Pros, basically any 2 or 3 chambered mufflers will work.

I have the Flowmaster Force II with the Super 40 series muffler on mine, and I really like the sound.
I have heard some people say that Magnaflow makes a deeper sound than a Flowmaster, but I haven't really compared them myself.

Eh I don't know about that...maybe at idle, MAYBE. I've heard 2 99-04 mustangs with magnaflows and neither of them sounded good imo. High pitched, tapped out and rushed...too similar to a civic to me. Most magnaflow mufflers utilize a straight thru design, not a chambered design, which is fine on v8's but a bad idea on v6's.

sonicpony is getting better and better at explaining things, props to you! lol

some states require catalytics so you would have to check before you decide to get offroad.

if i remember right sonicpony has the pypes bolt on catback - not sure whether or not he has a video about how it sounds but im sure it doesnt sound bad!
on my v6 i went with a catted x pipe from pypes, here is a video of my car if you want to hear it
