What gears are better for a turbo?

Hi,

For a while Ive been wanting to put a new rear end gear on my car. I pretty much had my mind set on getting 4.10's. The thing is though I also plan to turbocharge my v6, and Ive read that if you have 4.10's on. The turbo wont spool as fast. I just race stoplight to stoplight, so torqe is pretty important. What do you guys think .Will The 4.10's slow me down instead of helping me.

Thanks

(2004 v6 auto)

Re: What gears are better for a turbo?

its possible due to the torque multiplication factor that there will be less load placed on the motor, however its effects on spool IMO would be minimal at best.

btw, if you race stoplight to stoplight, why are you going turbo? are you using smaller turbo's that spool quicker to give you more or a low-mid range powerband, or a larger turbo(s) that will give you more up top?

Re: What gears are better for a turbo?

I would like to go turbo mainly because this is my daily driver ,and would like to put less wear and tear on my engine. However what Im aiming for is more low end.

The turbo that Im looking at getting is the street kit from TMA turbo.

Is this a good way to go, or is there a better more practical way that I should be looking at concerning my goal?

Yes the TMA kit's are awsome just tell Andy what your looking to do and he will give you the right size turbo for your goals. I got a rather larget turbo for a stock 3.8 but I am building a forged 4.2 now so I didnt want to have to upgrade. As for the gears do not go higher than 3.55's for 5spd and 3.73's for 4r70w if your going turbo.I am going down to 3.73's to stay in the boost a little longer.

your stock 3.27 gears will do just fine.... and how will having a turbo put less wear and tear on your engine?

+1 on the wear and tear....if anything u have to make sure that your engine is ready to put a turbo on it or otherwise, u'll be screwed...

Re: What gears are better for a turbo?

What I meant was , I can control the boost level, so im not constantly pushing out the same psi all the time, as I would with a supercharger. Im sure that makes a little diffrence on the life on my engine. Hopefully Im understanding correctly.

your set boost limit only comes into effect at WOT. the only time you will make full boost is at WOT, so setting it at any level other than the desired setting for full throttle would be useless during your commute.

any driving you do under the boost spectrum will not change the amount of boost you make regardless of what you have it set at.

if you want less wear and tear, dont go WOT as often.

10 is pretty safe but its all in the tune. I could have prolly went to 12psi because we were conservative on the timing and A/F, but id rather be safe than sorry
