Arrow 2003 3.8 V6 Spark Plug Install

Morning guys.

I've had some new plugs and wires laying around for awhile and I think it's about time I put them in my car. I have a 2003 3.8L V6 Stang and I'm looking for any type of tutorials to help me install these. I used to have a chevy and the plugs were all right on the top. I looked down into my engine compartment and the plugs on the drivers side look easy, but the passenger side looks quite difficult. Does anyone have an instruction manual or description of the step by step process for changing the plugs an wires in my car, what tools will be needed, etc? I believe I have most of the tools, just want to make sure there won't be something strange that I may not have. Pictures may help too! Thanks for the help.

Re: 2003 3.8 V6 Spark Plug Install

For your car its actually quite easy, as you said access is the only real issue here. You have to remove the air box first. You will see a plug in that you can disconnect near the air filter (behind it area) unplug it (undo the battery as well negative terminal before you start)

Then you will see the air box is bolted to the area near the fender with a 10mm bolt. Remove it carefully. Then you will see the throttle body, unscrew the little metal thing and slide the intake down and off the throttle body, all other connectors remove and take note where they were so you can put them back. Slowly pull the intake out of the car and put it over to the side. This is a GREAT opportunity to clean the MAF sensor (if you want to know about that reply and let me know or PM me)

Now you can access plugs on both sides. Take ONE plug wire off the plug and use a spark plug removal socket with a ratchet/extension/wobble/elbow/etc what ever works for you to slowly pull the plug out (make SURE you are removing not making more tight)

Once the plug is out, generally they make a slight noise before they start to get loose and can stick a tad bit but not bad) take it out and label where it came from however works best.

Double check the gap on the new plugs (should be to spec not sure what that is) and use a TINY bit of antiseeze (do not over do it) and hand thread the plug in the hole carefully do NOT strip the threads or cross thread, it will go in just take your time.

Once its in snug it by hand then snug it with the ratchet, dont go crazy here, snug is good, mine for example are 15ftlbs (not that much)

Now if you have new plug wires or using old put a little of that contact stuff on the tip of the plug or in the boot etc and snap her back on. If replacing trace the plug wire to the coil and swap it out. You remove ONE plug wire at a time to ensure you dont put the wrong one on the wrong plug.

Reverse install on air intake and reconnect the battery.

Thanks! Changed them last night. It was a lot easier than I thought. I first thought it was going to be impossible but patience and persistence got me through it. If you position your body right, it's not too bad.

thankfully mine are on top, but a foot down in a little hole... and the intake has to come off (which isnt much but when its down in the stupid fender it sucks to remove)

Why don't you just take the intake piping off and leave the intake down in the fender, or is it all one piece?

he's just ocd like that.

It's also a good time to check your filter and if it's a reusable to go ahead and re-oil the filter.
