Big Problem with the gas tank/filler neck/fuel etc

So being that it is 12:40 EST I don't expect any responses tonight, however I wanted to post this before I hit the sack. Tonight I was at a friends and had to park my car on the side of a road and the car was at like a 20-30 degree angle with the passenger side being closest to the side of the road/ditch. About 30 minutes prior to this I topped my gas tank off, bad mistake apparently. When I jumped in my car I could immediately smell gas and grabbed my flashlight and proceded to the rear of the car where the culprit was found. Because my car was on an angle with a full tank of gas (which was forced to the passenger side) it was leaking out of the filler neck. I lost 1/2 tank of gas, but that wasen't the worst of the problems. As I hit 50mph or so the car starts to sputter every time i push the gas down just slightly and this continued for my 30 minute drive home. I got on the interstate and cruised at 70mph, however every time i tried to hit the gas it starts sputtering. I'm wondering WTF the problem is??? I'm thinking that the line is somehow clogged (perhaps at the filter) or perhaps the fuel line/filler area/ or worse yet the sending unit is trashed? Of course ford is not open tomorrow, so I will probably wait until Monday, but I might replace the fuel filter tomorrow and see if it solves the issue. Regardless this is a lesson for us all. NEVER PARK ON A STEEP ANGEL ESPECIALLY WITH A FULL TANK. Any help is appreciated if this has happend to anyone in the past? Goodnight.

There is a grommet/gasket where the filler neck meets the tank. I believe it's a Ford only part but it's not too difficult to replace. You will need to unbolt the filler neck from the fuel door area and remove it that way.

I found it easier to drop the tank slightly to give me a better angle.

On the other issue, see if you can pull and codes that might have been triggered in the other experience and we'll go from there.

Re: Big Problem with the gas tank/filler neck/fuel etc

Coil pack was bad and two spark plug wires were melted to the header. Crazy that this happened at the same time as the filler neck gasket. Oh and I plan on doing the gas tank/filler neck gasket on my own and am assuming I should do it with little to no fuel in the tank right? At least that's what I think?

Correct, the least amount of gas the easier it will be. I've dropped a full tank before but it wasn't fun.

Re: Big Problem with the gas tank/filler neck/fuel etc

True, wow that sucks. Yea I'll be doing this on Wed an hopefully have the gas light on when I do it.... So its not necessary that I lower the gas tank correct? Just a little easier? I ask cuz I have no idea how to do this? Any help? I'll be having a friend with me so I doubt we will lower the tank, but just curious. Ohh and btw Ford wanted $310 for the gasket to be changed out. So a very good fix.
