Speedo works, Odometer does not..

On my '96 Mustang, the speedometer works great but the odometer stopped. I have no clue what is wrong - it seems like they would be using the same kind of system for both.

Can someone give me some ideas of what is wrong?

thanks!!!

The gear that turns the odometer is probably stripped out.

Re: Speedo works, Odometer does not..

Brent, thanks for the info. I checked out your pics - that is an awesome Mustang!! What kind of transmission do you have - I did not see it listed or didn't pick up on it. Mine's a 5-speed.

Question 1 - Is this a big deal to replace? No doubt I would have to put it up on jack stands. I've replaced the water pump so far, removed the plenum and one rack of injectors so far.

Question 2 - Is there an online web site where I can look at parts microfiche images online?

thanks
David

Shouldnt need to put it on jack stands... you'll need to remove your guage cluster, open it up, and check and see if something is stripped in there. Maybe even remove the cluster and take it to ford to have them do it. I dont know what it would cost though.

I was thinking it would be the drive gear in the transmission like used to drive speedometers before they changed to electronic.

This is my thought as well.

There is a little plastic tooth gear in the sending unit in the transmission. It is probably stripped.

If it was that gear the speedo wouldnt work either. Unless Im retarded and there's two different gears in there. One for odometer, one for speedometer, but I figured it all ran on the same thing.

Ah, I read it wrong. I thought the speedo wasn't working.

So yeh, I'd say something in the dash.
