Re: Need more power!!

Cold air intake kit. Dual exhaust with better air flow and a heavier foot.

+ a good tuner and change the gears in the rear to 3.73 even if your auto it will make a HUGE difference.

Re: Need more power!!

look on ebay for CAI they will run $30-$330 just depends on what you want, I paid $36 for mine with shipping. For exhaust buy a adapter to go to 2.5 and buy a flowmaster/mag-no-flow or what ever you prefer and buy a tailpipe for a gt that is 2.5 that will free up the exhaust a little.

Re: Need more power!!

i would start off with a cai and tuner. then i would go with true dual exhaust, the underdrive pullys( as long as you don't have a sound system) screamin deamon coils with msd superconductor wires and bosch fussion plugs. i would add traction lock and gears, maybe a set of headers. and you can't forget about the suspension. it really depends on how fast you want to go. if you run out of bolt ons, there is alway nitrous, or a turbo or super charger.

Honestly?
Savings account mod is the best.

cold air, dual exhaust, none of it is going to make a big difference.

Biggest difference at lowest cost: VAP windstar kit, gears & tlok, nitrous.
Next you could do H/C/I 5 speed HCI / gear'd cars are running high 13s

Only other way is boosting.

Re: Need more power!!

I have a '04 3.9
2-Questions:
(1)-is a true dual exhaust better than a y-pipe?
(2)-why no underpulley's if you have a stereo, I don't know what underpulley's are?
Thanks

Yes true-duals is better a y pipe leads to one exhaust tip a H or X pipe leads to two exhaust tips and for underdrive pulley's if you know where the crankshaft pulley is that is what you will be replacing, they are lighter than the stock pulley and that means less mass to rotate, but that has negative impacts the other components attached to the belt system, in lamans terms they don't work as effieciently so having a expensive sound system can put a lot of strain on the alternator/battery.

Re: Need more power!!

underdrive pulleys are the pulleys that the serpine belt passes through when you open the hood in the front of the car

I don't agree. At all. Honestly it's the only way the guy is going to get some performance and have fun learning his car. The mods will make a great deal of difference and you'll notice it each time. Horsepower is another story, aint gonna happen naturally aspirated without spending some serious cash. After you get to the point of having a nice sounding exhaust, CAI under drive pulleys, 3.73 gears, and a throttle body- You Will Get A Dyno Tune- I promise that after that day, the car will be a blast to drive. NOS is not going to be utilized day to day trips to work and to the store.
Just my opinion though.

I agree with what you're saying. It all depends on what you want to do with your car. There's nothing wrong with adding exhaust, a CAI, some gears and a tune. You won't have 300 hp, but you will have a v6 that's woken up quite a bit from stock form. I'd say that's a great set of mods for a dd. Half of the fun is installing the mods on your car...being able to say I put this on is a good feeling. Some things such as gears and engine work can be best off left to professionals if you're not familiar with the process or experienced in engine building.

...and I agree, nitrous is definitely not a good mod for any situation except track duty...your engine is a ticking time bomb without necessary support mods and beefier engine internals. Sure you can run a 50 shot on stock internals, but it's only going to last for so long.

So if you want a lightly modded dd car with some bolt ons, go ahead and do it...you'll gain some power and torque, and the car will definitely feel better than stock.

If you want a high hp car, look into more serious mods like aftermarket h/c/i, forced induction and nitrous.

Don't forget other components of the car like suspension will help improve the overall feel of the car. New springs, shocks/struts and cc plates will make the car handle much better over stock performance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a gear change doesn't add hp, it just makes the vehicle get out of the hole faster, right?

Yep that's what they do, but it's one heck of an improvement compared to the stock 3.31.

Yah I know, if it's one heck of an improvement over 3.31's, just imagine going from 2.73's to 4.10's

Re: Need more power!!

They really did bone those cars during those years...2.73 gears, open differential, single port 3.8L that made 145-150 at the crank...but then the competition at that time was a 3.4L v6 in the camaro, then the 3.8 in 96.

My friend is a huge vette guy, but he has '97 LS1 Z28 camaro, and we always talk about where cars are going with hp, like you said middle '90's the cars are only making 140-150hp and now the v6's are making 300hp.

Yah it's crazy, and definitely not a bad thing, because the more hp a v6 makes means the more a v8 will make

But I will say it took Ford and even GM long enough to make big hp v6's. Foreign companies have been making some coupes and sedans with well over 210 hp. It's bad enough I'd get my *** whooped by a good portion of the newer "family" sedans out there.

Re: Need more power!!

They had to do something with the motors, you can change the body style only so many times before an individual gets bored of the car in general, and not to use the technology available to make the car much better in the way of horsepower, but its not used until 2010, I like my 4.0L its a decent motor, I wish they would of used the "coyote" motors in '05 instead of now. My goal is to pull the 4.0l and put in the 3v 4.6l because you can do so much more with 8 than 6.

Re: Need more power!!

I have a 2002 3.8l v6 and i have just an American Muscle CAI for $70, and then i put on Pypes Street Pro true dual exhaust with 2.5'' pipes and 3'' steel tips for $400 (worth the money!) and those right there with a tune gave me a noticeable amount of torque and power, not a whole lot but you can defiantly tell.

I have beat 2 out of 4 Stock GT's with just that set up. So if your looking for a great sounding car with some extra HP and not having to spend much money do the CAI and dual Exhaust and a tune up. Next im going with better gears so ill keep you posted when i get those done! hope this helped!
