Steering wheel vibrates back and forth

yea, like the title says. since i got the stang back 2 weeks ago, i've been having some vibration transmitted though the steering wheel. it started off fairly mild, but it's getting slowly worse. it starts to kick in around 40mph, and gets more noticable from there... i'm thinking it's just the alignment being out of wack from the car sitting for the better part or 2 years, but i figured i'd get opinions anyway

I will probably be putting a MM coilover kit on it in the next month or so, so if it is an alignment issue, that'll solve it. but if it's not the alignment, what might it be?

Re: Steering wheel vibrates back and forth

Get your wheels balanced first. Especially since the vibration is relative to speed.

Most place will check alignment and balance for free...only if it needs to be adjusted will they start charging.

Re: Steering wheel vibrates back and forth

I borrow this thread for a moment as I am experiencing major problems with steering weel vibrating when getting up to speed. It usually starts at 50 mph or so, but not all the time. Sometimes it is worse than others, and sometimes it does not vibrate at all.

I have aligned the weels, balanced the weels, changed tires, and then did alignment and balancing again. Problem remains. I have even suspected the car being in an accident before I bought it because the way it is handling.

My car is an 01 Mustang Convertible V6. Any ideas are more than welcome.

PS. I have no previous experience from Mustangs so my knowledge is limited.

Thanks for any help out there!

Re: Steering wheel vibrates back and forth

i just had an accident, had 2 front wheels replaced and it did the same thing, the steering needed adjusting, and i needed a major alignment

that seemed to fix it for me :dunno:

if your rims are not hub centric then you can have issues even with a properly balance tire with shacking. If it isnt the tires, it could be the rotors (not usual but it does rotate) or the steering shaft~ or the rack etc something along the pipe line.

Check your u-joints on the halfshaft, or have someone check them.. the randomness of your vibration is very typical.. it can be fine sometimes, then a certain road vibration or load will set the vibration off and it'll get worse for a bit, could also be the rear
