Run the shifter into each gear, turning the input shaft each time to make sure the output shaft actually spins.. and that it doesn't make a grinding noise while doing so..

Beyond that its kind of a crap shoot..

Could see if they forgot to change the fluid.. crack the drain and see if there are numerous metal shavings.. Chances are if the car is wrecked, the transmission is OK. If the car looks to be in OK shape then its either had trans or engine issues

Also check the input shaft for play or wobble if it does don't buy it unless you plan on putting a bearing kit in it.

Also if reverse is the only gear you lost then it would be easy to fix with a junk tranny with a good reverse gear because you only have to take the tailshaft apart and a clip and slide the gears off and switch them. Its not as hard as you may think.

Re: what is compatible

T-5s should be rather cheap and are easy to yank out since they unbolt from the OUTSIDE of the bellhousing (who would ever do it the other way... yup newer mustangs do it backwards) so you can have the trans out in no time.
