Question 96 3.8v6=does anyone know for sure

anyone know for sure which years and engines will drop in my 96 stang3.8l without any modifications? will a 02' 4.2liter drop in and match up to my harness? would love to go v8 but dont want it to turn into a major project. need to get it back on the road. had a dead cylinder #2 so pulling the head now cuz i suspect an exhaust valve to be the problem. can just buy another complete engine for $600 instead of putting this back together and i can put it on a stand and build a monster out of it for later use. stock 3.8 150hp isnt workin for me so can i use a newer engine? maybe a 4.2? i would REALLY appreciate some help if anyone knows. thanks so much.

the V6 mustang from 94-04 had a 3.8L (revised in 99 for more hp/tq and the fuel system is different etc)

The 4.2 is from an F150 as I am sure you are aware, many have done the 4.2 swap but it seems most do the F150 4.2L's rods and such and put them in their stock 3.8 engine block.

the 99-04 have 193hp/220tq or right there. You an build your current 150hp single port 3.8 with ported heads/intakes/and a custom cam and with a few bolt ons have 220rwhp or so which is far more than even the 01-04 V6s have stock (160 in manual trans)

Re: 96 3.8v6=does anyone know for sure

^^^Good option v6-wise...

Or you could find a 96-98 GT 4.6L engine, do a PI head swap from a 99+ 4.6L and have ~260hp 300 tq at the flywheel.

This would get you the v8 for a decent price without the hassle of a major project. Most engines come with harnesses and ecu's. This way your at ~230 rwhp, more than even a built single port v6 for much less money...you could always build up that engine or add bolt ons for more power...plus you have that v8 torque...something the v6's won't have.

I say go for the v8 swap...it's easier in your model year car and buying a bigger v6 and building it will cost more. It's up to you though, if you want a bigger v6 then do it, there are plenty of guys out there who have the 4.2 build and are happy with the results.

that actualy exactly what i wanted to hear. that was my original plan but after reading about a V8 swap on another site, i was lead to believe it would be an expensive nightmare and not to waste my time trying. Thank you for all of your help!

if you are not really attached to the car you could just yank a motor like yours that runs put it in and then sell the car and buy a GT if thats what you want. This would remove tons of hassle and trying to sell a car with a different motor than came in it (will hurt value)
