Ya it seems that Flowmaster 40's, an o/r h-pipe or catted h-pipe if emissions are checked, and longtube headers make for the best sounding v6. I'm sure the car would still sound good without the longtubes...as in Lalayla's case. The longtubes would add a deeper tone overall and some slight performance gains.
At idle and low rpm's the car will sound damn good for a 6, but above 2500rpms it will get higher pitched. No way around it, just the nature of our sixers. Also, Flowmasters are known to drone, so this could happen as well.
I wouldn't spend a ton on exhaust...an o/r h-pipe from MAC is ~$150, Flowmaster 40's with mandrel bent piping at an exhaust shop - $160 for the mufflers and whatever shop costs are for piping/labor. Probably $400-550 for exhaust installed. Longtubes would be another $300 plus install.
