Considering new gears and a TLOK. Help?

Ok so ive been thinking and i want to put new gears and a traction-lok
I don't know whats better 3.73 or 4.10 gears?
and im looking at this-> Ford Racing 7.5" 28 Spline Traction - LOK Limited Slip Differential for $220 on American muscle is it good?
And last how hard is it to install them do I need a mechanic I heard the TLOK isnt that hard to install on your own (a review)?

Installing gears requires special tools to adjust the clearances needed to make sure the gears mesh together right. Definitely not a job for a novice.
I like 3.73 gears in mine, but its just a matter of personal preference. Thats what i had in my '84 and '85. Im still contemplating changing the original 3.08's in my Cobra.
I never had a problem changing the clutches in my differential, but when it comes to the gear install, I take it somewhere.

In a v6 you are gonna want to go with 4.10s because they are the fastest accelerating gear. Enjoy your ride

I would definitely go with 3.73's, 4.10's will probably be too aggressive for all around driving

Re: Considering new gears and a TLOK. Help?

general rule of thumb for v6's : 4.10's with an automatic transmission and 3.73's with a standard transmission.you would be a lot better off replacing the 7.5 with a 8.8 rear end especially if you have plans of making some decent h.p. in the future. if you plan on keeping it somewhat tame then the 7.5 will be efficient and less expensive to build. your looking @ roughly $250-$500 in parts and another $300-$500 in labor. not something i would try to do your self since there are special set up tools and lots of patience required to setting up rear ends. good luck and pm me if you have any questions.

Too agressive? In a mustang. It's a sixxer, it already gets decent mileage. And you kinda want to make up for it's low torque rating for better city acceleration. I guess we would need more info. I have 3.90s in my 4.6 simply because I wanted that brisk take off but not ruin my mileage. All of my friends in the mustang club in saskatoon have 4.10a in their edge cars and swear by them. They also said there city mileage improved but highway fell by 1 or 2 mph which when you look at it keeps the average roughly the same due to increased city mileage. Unless your putting more than 50% highways miles then the average would suffer somewhat. Do what you like bro and get whichever sound best. Go to paladinmicro. Google it. They have a 2003 mustang as a test cat for various plenums and intakes and such but if you look on the left hand side and click the gear one it has every tranny gear and tire size so just punch in your info and it will tell you your rpms. I bookmarked it it has all the info you could ever want to get our cars to 300 hp with bolt ons and proper tuning.Click on every link on the left hand side and you will be amazed the info. Anyways merry christmas and 4.10s

Re: Considering new gears and a TLOK. Help?

i have 4.10's in my Mach 1 , great gear , and 3.73's in my v6 and theres barely enough engine for those , 4.10's would be over kill on a v6 in my opinion

Re: Considering new gears and a TLOK. Help?

you wont get any hp from gears an tlok. just better acceleration off the line. 7.5 tlok is just what fits on a v6 mustangs 7.5 rearend. 8.8 rearends are just stronger and can take lots of power. you dont need the 8.8 rear unless your planninng on going forced induction (supercharger, turbo)

and yes u need a mechanic to install

for an automatic, 4.10s are recommended if you're not going to add much else to the car. i talked with a pep boys employee and he said if you're going to add anything like a supercharger or a turbocharger then you want to go with 3.73s, and American Muscle also recommends it. if you're just looking to get off the line a little faster, then 4.10s will work just fine.

Re: Considering new gears and a TLOK. Help?

I have a set of Ford Racing 3:73 gears and a Motive bearing kit sitting here ready to be installed next payday. I use the Mustang as a commuter/street use.
PLEASE tell me if a T-Lok is something I would notice or what situations I would notice it other than the obvious (deliberate burnouts ect.)
After reading this, I started thinking maybe I'll be missing something.

A t-lock is a must on a performance vehicle. Just buy a used on they are listed all the time and if the rear end is out of the car you might be able to tackle the install yourself. Happy driving
