01 Sixer help

Hey everyone.this is my first post on here.been reading over all the posts and found a lot of really helpful things on what to do with my v6(most helpful formus out there by far). So thanks for all the help you've already posted.I have an 01 v6 with 125k on it right now.I know 125k is to much to really get into to many mods at the point but a engine swap will be comming soon! My brother has a stock 01 gt besides a flowmasters ehaust so id like to stay with the 3.8 and put money into shutting him up on the strip in the near future even if it means a lot of spending. Right now its 100 percent stock and I was wondering what would be best to do first. Id like to start with an exhaust but not sure what to go with x or h,which brand, piping size.id like the closest to a gt sound.the other thing is if it is okay to get bolt ons and put them on now and switch them over to the new motor after the swap or if I should just wait till after the swap! What would be the best things to start with keeping it under 1000 dollars to start with??

Re: 01 Sixer help

I owned an 01 V6 3.8L and they do have potential, do not neglect suspension. Without the ability to hook up your car is 100% worthless, like having a 1000rwhp street car.

For the basics, CAI, Under drive, pulley, True dual 2.25 in pipe exhaust, tune, shifter (if manual).

AFter that you can put ported intakes on it (upper and lower) or do heads/cam with it and end up with around 200-230rwhp. Even more so you can stroke it to a 4.2L and push more hp/tq.

Suspension start off with lower control arms from someone like maximum motorsports, ford heavy duty upper control arms (can bind if to stiff dont over do these), good spring rates and shocks/struts (hard core strip would be best for hooking up but suck for street driving/handling etc). Subframe connectors are GREAT dont forget those (and cheap), A tubular K member helps weight transfer as well.

Do NOT forget the V6 has GREAT weight compared to the V8, 3200lbs or so not bad lol. You need to determine a realistic goal and we can help you determine whats needed to reach that goal. Its rather easy to shave a second off your times putting you in the 14's~ not to far from a stock 99-04 GT.

Yes its a 5speed.but my main goal right now is to just get it around a gt time.eventually I'm goint to go with some kind of induction but for right now I'm just looking into what things I can do that can be undone pretty easy when I get the new motor put in! Is there much more into putting a 4.2 in rather than another 3.8??like money wise and labor wise or are they pretty close to the same work and what's your opinion on the 4.2 swap? And is exhaust a good thing to start with or should I go with tb,cai, and tuner first? Any thoughts on a good muffler to go with on the sixers that would sound like a gt?

Re: 01 Sixer help

a 4.2 swap is made by taking an F150 4.2 and "borrowing" internal parts etc, some have done it on here. No idea on price but not horrible.

No exhaust system will sound like a GT other than perhaps at idle~ its just not how an even fire 3.8L will sound, just the way it is most just do a GT take off catback and have it fabbed up and leave it be, or do flowmasters.

No bolt ons really do much at all for your car, they do help but not as much as you woudl think.

Rear end gears and suspension will help a ton compared to some thing like a CAI that gives you 5rwhp if your lucky.

Don't get a 4.2 if you want to stay with a sixer get a 3.8 or if you want a v8 get the cobra 4.6 dohc or the legendary ford 5.0 both badass engines. I have a 00 sixer and I put an CAI on and I am outing on a flowmaster. You can buy a tuner and tune your car to those upgrades. Or instance you put on a CAI and mayne get 10 hp, but with a tune you can get up to thirty horses. you can also tune your car to a perforemamce tune and gain 30 more horses. That's my next upgrade

Id love to go with a cobra or a 5.0 in my sixer lol.I think anyone would.but there's a lot to converting a v6 to a v8 of the same year let a lone a 5.0 or cobra.I'm just trying to figure out what I can do to my v6 that's gonna make it keep up with a stock gt of the same year.and correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that your not gonna get a 60 hp jump from a cai and a tuner.that would put my sixer up close to the gt hp with just a cai and a tune. The 10 hp from the cai is what you'll get after the tune and the tune is up to 30 hp I doubt bone stock is gonna give you 30 but like I said I could be wrong.

Re: 01 Sixer help

many v6 owners feel they wasted their time/money investing it into the their car because the end result didnt meet their ultimate goals for the car. Thats why its a GREAT idea to really sit down and determine where you actually want to be and then determine what it will take to get there and see if that something you want to do.

Some say "all I ever want is 300hp etc etc etc" but... once you get there you will quickly find its not what you thought it was and so forth.

I'm not looking to turn it into anything special really.just looking to have it faster than my bro's gt b4 he gets back from iraq ina few months.after that I'm gonna put more time and money into it down the road.its going to be my everyday driver so it doesn't have to be to much! Id be happy to hit 300 hp in it. Just trying to figure out the best way to go to get started.

Re: 01 Sixer help

You wont be able to hit 300hp with out major modifications sadly. You can probably get to around 220-230 without a ton of issues but any more will require some major modifications.

Gears/Tlok
Intake
Exhaust
Underdrive crank pulley (25%)
tune
drive shaft (aluminum)
weight reduction (lighter rims for example)

all that will help but wont get you where you want to be, still need another half second or more off your times.

Kinda off topic but does anyone know if I could get two high flow cats instead of my stock 4 and still pass pa inspections??and is it worth getting two high flows rather than keeping the four or just removing two of the stock ones?? And anyone have any opinons on flowmaster delta 40s on a six??heard a lot of mixed reviews on umm...anyone heard them in person?
