Re: rear end swap

check for ABS if one rear end going in your car doent have it and yours does... you will have to swap axles between the rear ends for example.

Mostly its a swap right in and go kinda thing

Unfortunately no they're not the same. Also 99% of 96-98 mustangs came with 4 wheel abs. My 94 base model convertible has 4 wheel abs.

(To the original poster)
The only issue I see is if you find one without abs and yours has abs is the gt rearend might have 31 spline axels "some have 28" and the 7.5 v6 rearends only had 28 spline axels. So thats the only problem that you could come across.

They are all 28 from the factory. If its 31, they're aftermarket.

Re: rear end swap

Where are you getting your info? I know for a fact that fox body stangs also came with 31 spline axels "not all but some" didn't know if the newer stangs did or not. All explorers had 31 spline 8.8 91-99 "don't know about the newer ones" also all 7.5 fords had 28 spline no matter what year or car/truck.

Nowhere in particular. It's just common knowledge.

I'll try to find a source to prove it though.

Re: rear end swap

The following description implies it:

1986-11 Mustang 8.8" 31 Spline Traction-Lok Differential With Carbon Fiber Clutch Disks, M-4204-F318c at LRS - Same Day Shipping!

"Is your Mustang putting some serious power to the ground? If so, you'll probably need to upgrade to 31 spline rear axles. The original Mustang 28 spline axles are great for stock applications but serious power will snap them eventually"

Here's a thread on another site:

what spline number is in a stock 8.8 - Ford Mustang Forums : Corral.net Mustang Forum

The only late model Mustangs I know of with 31 splines are the 2001+ Cobras and the 2005+ V8s.

Well that proves nothing and they are also talking about 94-newer on the second one. I already said I didn't know if they put 31 spline axels in the newer ones but I've had two FACTORY rearends that I know have never been apart ever from fox body gt's 4 lug that had stupid 31 spline axels that I couldn't use because of the fact. The first link is just about upgrading to 31 spline.

Find me proof from ford themselves that say they only put 28 spline axels in the mustang and I will still call them liers.

Re: rear end swap

So? You are telling me that my friends mustang that he bought new in 89 with less than 100 miles at the car lot came with an aftermarket rearend?? I guess this could've happend. Oh and the 92 gt I got for scrap because it was totaled buy the woman that bought it new and never did any mods to it also came with an aftermarket rearend??

I just don't see a car lot or ford putting in a new aftermarket rearend in when the car is basicly new?? But I guess I'm wrong about this too.

SVTLX might as well use that 3.8 flywheel on your 5.0 because I'm probly wrong about that too.

Re: rear end swap

lol..im not sure on the flywheel...i looked it up on all data, and 95 cobra and v6 stang flywheel part number seemed really close. i just know from experience that just cause a part number is different doesnt mean its not the same or interchangable part. as im finding out with my 5.0 97 stang conversion....

im not gonna say that u r wrong straub...i personaly have never seen a 31 in fox or sn95 body...like the stuff bbunt had...ive always known 31 to be an aftermarket upgrade.

i cant debate it either way cause rear ends isnt my forte... i just know ive never broke my 7.5 with 450hp in 4yrs...lol.

honestly guys, i dont know who wins this debate.....

Re: rear end swap

he wins!!!.... I did some talking to my friend that owned that stang and he did tell me that the rear end was changed when it only had 3000 some odd miles on it because of a failed bearing in the rearend housing. So I guess they put an aftermarket rearend in it. Sorry for all the confusion I seriously thought it was a stock rearend as for the old ladys rearend out of her fox ??? your guess is as good as mine.

But sorry bbunt you were right. I was wrong...... again.

Re: rear end swap

But as of the flywheel question. No it won't work its balanced different, tried it on a 85 302 and it vibrated pretty bad when it started. I was curious myself and tried it. It will bolt up but you would have to find a place that could balance the flywheel for it to work right.
