My V6 vs. Mazda Miata???

My friend is getting a 92 Mazda Miata and I have an 02 V6 stang.
The mazda is a manual and my stang is auto.
Naturally, as soon as he gets it we will race!
Surely I can beat him...right?

Re: My V6 vs. Mazda Miata???

I don't know about that. Those miatas definitely got you beat on the weight side so if it's a short race don't bet on winning. If it's like a quarter mile race you should be fine

If he has a 4 I think you definitely got him. But don't race in a dumb place. Don't want any key getting hurt

You got him in a long race, but having driven a miata you definitely won't beat it in a short race... They get going quick

Re: My V6 vs. Mazda Miata???

In stock form they have stangs beat in cornering by far. The miata's have a low wide wheel base Me and my cousin had soo much fun pushing that little car in the turns

In South Georgia, there's a few good turns in country roads but nothing the stang can't handle. However, the miata's do seem more nimble.

Re: My V6 vs. Mazda Miata???

ALLL ABOUT POWER TO WEIGHT RATIO....if u could throw on some 410 gears with a T lock right quick and snatch u up a sniper NOS kit and spray a lil 50 shot it would be a walk in the park LOL....even without it youll pull on him if your cars been well maintenced...as in regular tune ups..etc!

Re: My V6 vs. Mazda Miata???

I'm new so this is one of my first posts. Reason I'm writing is that I have had several Miata's and still own a 93 LE. Up to 93 had the 1.6. After that, the 1.8.

What I can't figure out is why are you racing? First, its illegal and dangerous. The cops will take your car or cite you for reckless in most jurisdictions. Take it to a track if you must, but what's the point? The mustang should be faster off the line. But to really wring them out, take them to an SCCA Solo autocross. Anything else really won't prove anything. Suggest you put in shocks, struts and springs on the Mustang though. I just got a V6 and that will be next after I just upgraded plugs and wires.

Hopefully the Miata driver will have thought to put in new shocks as well as plugs and wires. They love to eat all those items. But it will kick your butt on an autocross unless its a Corvette course with long straights. Driver experience will be telling!

Be responsible, race on the track or closed course!

Gears are one of those things that should be professionally installed. Check some prices at some local shops. I've done mine before, but for a newbie, I would recommend professionals handle it!

Yip. And a good shop will charge you 300 tops and will never whine. Motive make good gears. I have 3.90s made by motive and they do not whine at all. Install is key

Re: My V6 vs. Mazda Miata???

I've heard quotes of more than that, but if you buy the gears and the install kit separately you should be able to find a shop willing to do it for no more than $300-400. If it's more than that, they're ********!

Roger that. Find the best price and let the pros handle it, but, now i need to know: 4.10s or 3.90s?? Also will this gear change kill my mpg? btw i do more 65-ish cruising than city driving but i have a fair amount of city driving...

K in my 2000 gt with stock gears I got 15/26. Now with 3.90s I get 18/25. The motor seems to be working less hard to stay at speed. I have a 5 speed. I drove a new edge with 3.73s and I didn't notice a difference over stock and when I drove on with 4.10s it was just too much shifting. I am very happy with the gears I have now. I get decent mileage and it hauls *** when I step on the pedal now

Re: My V6 vs. Mazda Miata???

The general rule is if you have a manual trans, go 3.73, and with an auto, go 4.10.
Everett's suggestion of 3.90's is a good one too. pretty much right in between.

Motive makes the 390's? I was searching for some not long ago. They're not that easy to find anymore.

Price on a ring&pinion can't be that much. I'll check em out though. My car has 355's and 410's might have me shifting into 5th. Not sure though. I need top of fourth at the traps.

220's with bearings ain't bad at all. Would be nice if I could tear it all down at the house so I don't have to rush it. I'm only gonna have a couple days to drop the trans and build it at my buddy's shop.
