97 v6 catlyic converter ?

i have a 97 v6 5spd. traded for it about a week ago the check eng lite came on . after goin to a few places and endin up at the exhaust shop .someone has apparently cut a big sqare hole in all 4 converters and gutted them. the exhaust shop wants 1500. to order a new y pipe with convs. or they say they will build me a custom y pipe with only 2 convs. for 600. ethier way seems pretty high 2 me. and the 3rd option is i have a friend who owns a junkyard that might have a used 1 .. but the exhaust shop won't put it on plus you never know if it could be stopped up . i asked a friend thats the manager at the parts store he said to leave it alone and buy a dummy 02 sensor to get the check eng light off . this is my wifes daily driver and we have 2 small children so it has 2 be dependable. we do not have emissons test in tn . i guess my ? is were can i buy the dummy 02 sensors or what year y pipes will fit . or does any one have any ideas ..thanks for any help

Here are some MIL eliminators at american muscle for $60 and your car will still be dependable. Also any y pipe from v6 mustang 96-98 will work.

Yah those prices are absolutely rediculous...you could probably install a used y-pipe with cats yourself. If you can find a wrecked 94-98 v6 you could pull the catted y-pipe off and install it on yours. It bolts onto the headers on either side and to the single pipe leading the muffler.

If you are leery of used cats, you could get the dummy cats as Straub suggested...those will solve the check engine light and not affect the car's reliability.

There is a member selling a stock new edge gt exhaust. I am sure you can get a great deal on it and then get the shop to just fab up the missing components. Then you get an h-pipe exhaust that will flow more than enough for your sixxer at a budget consious price. Just an idea to keep your costs down. And I think from what I read there was 33k on the exhaust so still lots of life left in the cats.

Yah good point. The member is Gt.Vert. He has full exhaust from the cats back from his 03 GT. Might want to PM him if it sparks any interest.

My only concern is fitment. I know there are some differences in stock exhaust from the 94-98's to the 99-04's. I'd say you could certainly make it work with some fabbing. Hell, if anything buy the catted h-pipe from him.

Re: 97 v6 catlyic converter ?

thanks for the info. on the mil eliminators. i bought a set that seems 2 be the easiest/cheapest way 2 go. . yeah i thought $600-1500 for stock stuff was a little much i haven't looked at the prices but i would think for $1500 i could get a whole aftermarket dual exhaust . heck i could probably get another car for that

Re: 97 v6 catlyic converter ?

dont pay 1500....

I would go to a junk yard and yank out the stock Y pipe from a V6 from your year type and then do a custom catback on it (should cost 300-400 bucks depending). Total investment should be around 400-500 bucks... if that.

Leave them off and get mil eliminators to suit off the o2 censors.

MIL eliminators sometimes dont work good~ but they are cheap so might be worth giving a try.
