Speedometer going crazy

I have a 1995 mustang with a 3.8L 5 speed trans. It just started a few days ago when I was driving. The speedometer started going crazy. This never happend before. Now it just happens when I put it in neutral mostly. Every now again it happens when I first start driving then it goes to normal when it is in gear. The transmission is fine and not making any noises. The only thing I have no idea what it could be. Can anyone help???

Re: Speedometer going crazy

It flucutes from 50 to 20 to 40 and so on. The needle just jumps around to different speeds instead of staying on the speed the car is going.

Speedometer gear possibly. I believe it may still use a cable in yours. Plastic gear will wear out.

Re: Speedometer going crazy

That could be possible. The body has 180,000 on it. The speed sensor is a possibly too. Just letting off the throttle now it flucates and sometimes driving too.
