Gear question

I have a 2002 v6 mustang thats stock atm an i was thinking about putting different gears in it. Ive heard a lot of people talkin about 4.10 gears in for an auto ao i was going to do that. Question is what would be the result of that? Talkin mileage, proformance difference, wld it burn up my engine, and anything else u cld think of. This car is my daily driver

Re: Gear question

I'd go 3.73's in that car , 10's are a little steep

Re: Gear question

you will gain about 1-1.25 tenths off your times vs 3.73 or so, and you would lose overall about 3-4mph highway and gain 1-2 city~ rpms will go up a good bit, not sure exactly but probably about 400 rpms~

Re: Gear question

well i mean it will be running 400rpms higher than normal so... technically yes... but its not like it will die much sooner or anything.

I think you will get tired VERY quickly with 4.10s in a manual, shifting is much quicker.

Re: Gear question

I wouldn't even say the highway mpg loss is that high...maybe a mile or 2 per gallon.

Either way, the gain in performance is worth the slight loss in mpg.

Have them professionally installed as there are many detailed parts of the install that require special tools and experience installing gears before.

Re: Gear question

You will love the new level of acceleration and performance. Its hands down the best mod I've done to the car. Remember too that all of the newer sports cars Mustangs included are now made with higher gear ratios. It performs great.

Will you have to buy the thing for the speedometer too? Cause they will be off?

Re: Gear question

A tuner should be able to correct the speedo.

Re: Gear question

tuner for newer cars, if older you need a speedcal unit, you can also get a speedcal unit on newer ones if you dont want a tuner~ just depends

Re: Gear question

I drive a (94-98) generation SN95 and the 3.73 gears in my manual put me at exactly 5mph faster than what I'm actually driving the car when monitoring the speedometer. For my generation vehicle you can get a mechanical gear replacement for the end of the cable to calibrate speedometer better. If you do not have a tuner to correct things there is a box you tuck under the gear shifter that corrects mph for you- Not a magic box, but you have to splice a couple of wires.
