So I cleaned my K&N filter yesterday and upon putting it back in I cranked up my car to ensure no air leaks I heard a ticking sound which i think is coming from under the valve cover on passenger side. How critical of an issue is this and where do I start? Car seems to run good but has been pretty sluggish lately.

04 3.9 engine.

Re: Ticking

Check your passenger manifold where it meets the midpipe. The flange is known to crack and break apart, especially if you run air conditioning often.

That would make sense. I do hear some crackling when I turn the car off from my A/C leaking and I've had exhaust issues with it before but I was near the catalytic converter which would be farther back right?

Yupp. This is just forward from where the manifold bolts to the mid-pipe. They are notorious for cracking here and mine actually fell completely apart and was dragging the ground with true duals.

Ouch! So do I need to be under the car to see if it's cracked or is there enough room to see from the engine bay?

Re: Ticking

I'm not real sure that you'll be able to see it easily. I found mine by putting my hand in that area with the car idling and finding the leak that way.

Re: Ticking

A good idea is to invest $8.00 and Seafoam the upper intake manifold while the engine is running. If your a big spender, buy a second can and pour it in the gas tank. Sluggishness gone! Guaranteed from me to you. Directions are on can and YouTube. Or just ask!

I did it on my 93...it was an amazing smoke show. Going to do it again once I get the 5.0 put in it this month. Looking forward to another amazing smoke show. lol

Def while idle. Not sure about when driving because I can't hear it inside the cab

Re: Ticking

FYI: And I hope this is as easy for you- Just realized that I had a taping noise last time I cleaned my K&N filter. Found it vibrating where it goes through the plate to under the wheel well. Its not a snug fit. Probably not it but thought I'd throw that out there.
And, Don't be scared of the Seafoam. I treat my car every 1000 miles. A Lot of Mustang owners do it! No problem. Trust me, you'll love the pick 'em up you get!

Doesn't sound like it's coming from that area but its worth taking a look at for sure. And yes I plan on doing seafoam soon. Thx!

I believe that those rockers come loose sometimes. Check through some old threads. I think straub ran into that problem a few times in the past.

I did the sea foam treatment because of the ticking sound and it didnt go away I didn't notice no difference. I thought the ticking sound was the valve it sounded right where the valve cover gasket was but it was the intake manifold like the other guy said and I had tru duals my mechanic charged me 160 to do it.
