CEL question

CEL came on and it's the "evaporative purge valve malfunction" one. I also have another symptom that might be related... when I remove the fuel cap I get a LOT of pressure released. So, the vapors that build in the tank are not being burned in the engine. Is it possible that an incorrect gas cap could cause this? Or am I doomed to try to fix the maze of hoses going to the evap canister?

Thanks
Greg

Re: CEL question

no its good that its holding pressure that means your lines are good and not leaking the pressure out and that your evap purge valve is not opening. i say replace the valve and you should be good to go

Re: CEL question

I didn't write down the code while at Autozone (dumb move). They carry the valve for $50 though it looks like I will have to replace some of the vacuum lines along with it. So, this will allow the tank to vent properly then? I've never had a car blow fumes at me when I took the cap off before

Removed the valve today and jumped the connector. Sounded like it wanted to work but no airflow through it. Cleaned it with darn cleaner and a compressor then jumped it again. Heard the valve open and close and air flows through when open. Cleared the code and reinstalled. Hope that does it. Thanks you all!

Well you got lucky. Usually the solenoid goes bad.
