03 v6 upgrades?

I have an 03 v6 3.8l, 5 speed and I was wondering what the best upgrades would be. I'm about to replace the clutch and all the bearings, new brakes, and order a cai from american muscle. What does everyone suggest? Please post anything you have as advice or as past experience and be specific please. I've had the car for about 6 months and everything is stock.

What kind of budget do you have? Can't go wrong with gears and a tlok. I'd say full exhaust as well.

Re: 03 v6 upgrades?

Keep in mind bolt ons don't net a huge amount of power. You'll see some gains after a tune, but nothing incredible. The most common are exhaust, intake, underdrive pulley, possibly a windstar intake. Gears are a good mod as they really boost your acceleration by distributing the power better throughout the powerband.

Don't forget to upgrade other components - suspension, brakes, drivetrain...plus there are plenty of comestic and interior mods you can do to make the car look better. Something as as simple as a short throw shifter can make shifting much easier and more fun...it's relatively inexpensive (140-180) and feels way better compared to stock.

How would I go about changing to a short shifter? I know a mechanic who only charges me about 40 an hour for labor. And what type of interior and exterior changes? Like chrome?

Re: 03 v6 upgrades?

I'm not too familiar with the shifters as I have an auto, but I do believe the short throw unit basically bolts into place...it has different holes to adjust for height and placement. Your stock shifter knob would probably fit but it never hurts to upgrade to an aftermarket one...there's a lot of them out there.

I'd say you could install this yourself and save the +40 bucks.

Interior, exterior. dude (I'm assuming you're a guy), there are soo many options out there...chrome accents, black accents, grille deletes, spoilers, scoops, wheels, billet interior pieces...check out some of our site sponsors - American Muscle, CJ Pony Parts, Latemodel Restoration, etc...they all have a ton of parts and AM has a lot of pics and customer car pics.

It's really a personal preference...you could go with chrome, black or anthracite (grey) accents and wheels on your car...all depends on your paint color and what you like.

Re: 03 v6 upgrades?

That would look nice...I've seen a handful of true blue stangs with the black accents and it definitely worked.
