Noise going into gears

I have a 98 v6 with a 5-speed tranny. If I shift hard into 3rd from 2nd gear I get like a squeal (not necessarily a grind) but a weird noise. It goes into gear after but the noise concerns me. I have a decent Clutch so I don think it's that.
My dad says it goes be a synchro problem.
What can I do to stop this?

How many miles? And have you changed the rear differental fluid, or "gear oil"? If you have over 60K on it? When was the last time you had the transmission fluid changed? ( If you have 60K+ That could also have some do with it.. These are just my guesses from stuff I've heard.
