Ford doesn't care about the v6 model at the time and just put something together to sell with a mustang name. It can make some power but gotta spend money. Don't worry the engine is easy and cheap to fix compare to other cars

Re: why does my v6 have suck low power

because its an OHV (overhead valve push rod motor) that was just not designed for high hp situations~ just how it was... basically same engine since 94... be glad its a dual port instead of the single port in 94-98 which put out only 145-150hp~ lol

keep in mind its not up to par with v6s in todays market due to the 04 is 7 years old now, engines have came a long way compared to where they used to be.

those motors can be built to the tune of about 300rwhp N/A and boosted... some have seen 700+ rwhp when the motor is built, around 280-330 stock motor~ (supercharger/turbo)

What's dual port vs single port?

Re: why does my v6 have suck low power

The 94-98 3.8 v6's have single ports, one intake runner per cylinder.

The 99-04 3.8/3.9 v6's have split ports, 2 intake runners per cylinder. This design was the primary cause for the 40hp bump from the factory.

Re: why does my v6 have suck low power

To answer your original question...at the time, the v6's primary goal was to sell mass units, be appealing to a broad range of buyers, so that the more limited and costly models (these being v8's leaning towards, bullitts, mach 1's and cobras, not GT's) would be produced and sold in the more competitive driven market against GM and new foreign models.

When you break the v6 down, it really isn't a bad car. For $20k you got a large v6 with decent power (not fast compared to modern cars or v8's), but at the time enough for th e model's purpose, a handful of options - power seat, 6 disc premium sound system, alloys, spoiler and the mustang image.

Currently the entry level market has grown and become much more competitve. Foreign and domestic automakers are offering +300hp v6's that are technologically advanced and appealing.

It's quite simple and I have to agree with most who say it as well as Ford. The v6's at the time were primarily for mass sales and image. Sure an aftermarket has developed and there are fast v6's on the road, but that's with all smaller engines these days.

If you want major power and feel, buy a v8
