unanswered exhaust questions...???

ok guys... this has been bothering me since last wednesday when i went looking for a shop to install my exhaust. first off, i ordered my mufflers... 40 series origional flows, and some chrome tips...

then i called midas up and they said they could do it for around $400... and they just planed on keeping my y pipe and bending a reverse y pipe on the opposite side of the cat. i know this isnt going to give me any power, it doesnt make sence.

after that i went to another local shop and they told me to pretty much sell my new 40's (2) and got wih one muffler (one inlet, 2 outlet) to give me duel exhaust. this seems like its not going to give me power either...

i need to run cats cause i need to stay legal in ohio... someone please give me some insite on how i can use the mufflers i bought and get some good HP please... i'm lost.

Ok, first... dont let someone talk you into doing a Single to Double kind of thing. Find more a private "self owned" shop that can do this job for you. Have them fabricate you an H-pipe or even just go straight back from each header without your exhaust coming to an X or H. You should be able to have the job that you're describing done for plenty less than 400 smackers, Id say you should be lookin somewhere in the range of 150-250 for all the work to be done if youve already got the exhaust kit. Just make sure you do the exhaust right because you dont want some ghetto rigged thing hangin there.

Exhaust as a mod itself wont give you a huge gain in HP. WIth what i described youd probably be looking at about 5 hp. Its when you start doing other things that compliment the exhaust that you'll start feeling the gains from it a lot more. Did i help you at all?

zim, thanks for posting bud. that did help a bit but still. the second place i went to was a local shop called car toy store, and they seemed like they knew what they where talking about... but who knows. they where the ones that told me to go with a single m,uffler with 2 outlets... and i really didnt want to do that since ive already spent money on the mufflers(not a whole kit...). so what should i do now?

knowone has said this to me yet, but i think i'm starting to get an idea of what i can do. ewither go with straight pipes to 2 cats, or an h pipe to 2 cats... then the cats to the mufflers and on out the back? does that sound right?

if so, i need another cat... should i just go find a gt take off and replace the mufflers and tips i have? or should i get a second cat and have them fab everything else? this is starting to get stressful, and i want my f'n exhaust already... ive got the money, just not the time as i only have one week day off to get the work done.

why would you need a second cat?

Just have them cut the y pipe and make it straight pipes out to mufflers.

Or fab a h-pipe if you want one. Any good exhaust shop will do it.

because... maybe im seeing this wrong... the pipes come out the heads to a y pipe, the y pipe goes to the cat and the cat goes to my muffler and out the back stock right? so wouldnt i need to cut the y pipe and have 2 pipes going to 2 cats to 2 mufflers and out the back? what dont i understand, lol?

maybe im looking at it wrong or something. please clearify.

Each header goes into a pipe. the 2 pipes come down each side of the engine, they each have 2 cats on them, they in turn attach to a y pipe that runs to a single muffler and out the back thru a single tail pipe.

all you have to do is cut the Y behind the cats and have 2 shopr pipes welded in and they attach the to mufflers to is and thn run ato tail pipes out the back.

My advise is to continue to shop around a mom and pop muffler shops. Find some hotrodders and ask them where they go to get exhaust work done!!!!

ooooooooooooooooo!!!

see, i think i'm going to write my own exhaust how-to cause i could clearify so many unanswered questions. ive been told so many different things now, but nothing actually pertaining to how my stock setup is. now that i know how the stock setup is, it makes everything so much clearer.

well sweet. i feel so much more relieved. i didnt know that the stock 6 had 2 cats already. i thought it was 1 cat after the y pipe. i was like, wtf, this doesnt make any sence. cool.

it doesnt really matter unless youll be making lots and lots of HP. X pipe or H pipe is what id recommend though.

i also have an exhaust question. I just bought 2 flowmaster 40 series mufflers and i was wondering how much it would cost to just weld them in the place where my 2 cats were. right now im running the cats with the o2 sensors.

U cant put yout mufflers inplace of your cats. 2 reasons, 1. it would not fit, 2. your cats are diffrent then your mufflers. from your engine, you have your headers, that hooks to a pipe with your 2 cats. (2driver side + 2 pass side= 4)those pipes hook to your Y pipe. then that Y pipe hooks to your muffler, then over the rear end out the back. cause you have 2 40 series, then you can 1. cut your Y pipe and make it a "true Dual" set up *this is what i have w/ dynomax mufflers* 2.take your Y pipe off, replace with a H or X pipe. what ever way you go, that gives you 2 pipes going to the back, weld (or if you cant weld, clamp) your mufflers to those pipes in on each side of the drive shaft right before your rear end. then take and bend some pipe over the rear end *DO NOT GO UNDER UNLESS YOU HAVE IRS < v6 stangs dont have!!! * then on pre 99's the tips center line will be lined up with the "cut out section in the rear"(look at the bumper right under the MUSTANG) on 99+ buy a GT take off, (u could cut your bumper ) or make your hangers abit longer and go under your bumper. ill find some pics of my setup (although i have side pipes) and then post later.

EDIT::: cause your thing said your a V8 then take off fac mufflers and replace with yours
