Rear end swap

I have been debating buying a Tlock for my 7.5" rear or just swapping to an 8.8 rear from a GT... If I was to buy 8.8" axles and an 8.8" diff w/ gears... would that be considered an 8.8" rear end on my v6? or is there more to it that that?

I am also aware that I will need a new drive shaft...

Re: Rear end swap

I'd imagine it'd be just as easy to pick up a complete 8.8" rear assembly off a wrecked GT...it'll bolt right in place.

If the car has higher miles or you aren't sure of the condition, buy a rebuild kit for the differential and gearing.

Re: Rear end swap

I've been looking, but it's hard to find wrecked GTs that still have the rear end... and peole are selling these rear ends online for upwards of $1,000... when I can get a brand new diff/axles/drive-shaft for less than that on AM...

I'm just planning on doing a Coyote Engine swap in a couple years, so I am gonna need a stronger rear end... but at the same time, I want Posi now

Actually, I did a GT rear end swap a couple weeks ago. It was a used one out of a 2001? I believe. The total cost after labor was $500. I'd say shoot for that.

Re: Rear end swap

I just missed a free 8.8 with about 30k on it. It was in a city about an hour away, but by the time I had the time to go, he had already given it away. I guess the guy was going to swap his 7.5 with it but had sold the car and just had these other parts filling up his garage and wanted them gone. He could have sold them and made some decent cash but I understand. I just gave away my 94 stang just to get it out of the drive way. Check craigslist often, sometimes people are more interested in getting stuff gone than making some money.

Re: Rear end swap

Ive been checking junkyards around myself as well as craigslist and there seems to be no GTs in my area. Either people are really careful with their mustangs here, or theyre already all dead

Re: Rear end swap

You could also expand your possibilities and look for a posi 7.5" from a Ranger or an older Fox body. 8.8" rears from thunderbirds and lincolns might also work on your sn95...just something to consider.

Haha I've got both at my grandfathers house. The Lincoln is still driven, but the thunderbird is not at the moment

I'd get the 8.8 if you really plan to build your car. If you get the same year I think you can use your stock driveshaft. I live in the bay area so I see 8.8 a lot, just keep checking craigslist.
