Occassional "clunk" on start up

Our 2000 V6 convertible (75 k miles) experiences double clunking sound on about every thrid or fourth start-up. Any ideas on what is causing it?

Can you pinpoint where the sound is coming from? And is this in park before moving or what?

It's in park when the ignition is turned on. Sounds like the driver's side rear part of the engine compartment-Rocks the car pretty good then fires up.

You might want to check and make sure your starter is tight. If the starter is loose it may be moving slightly before settling against something so it can turn the engine over. I'd check on that...

That may not be it, just trying to troubleshoot from a computer lol. I could see it causing it though.

also check your engine mounts if they are loose or warn when the engine moves on start up it could be hitting something~ You can get under there and look for shinny places where something has been hitting on something else as well~

If you have a strut brace it can do this. Mine will clunk off the cold air intake when I start it every so often.

Re: Occassional "clunk" on start up

I took it into the shop and that is exactly what it was. Apparently the previous owner was involved in an accident that bent the brace a little. Good call-Thanks SB
