Catalytic converter cut

Hey guys I have a 1995 v6 mustang, I was told by a mechanic that I need new cats and I was wondering if I can just cut them all off and put new individual ones on because I found it cheaper with the parts separate. I live in california too so yeah need it to pass smog thanks

Re: Catalytic converter cut

to get it to pass smog you will need factory cats, the sniffer there is stupid and very tough to pass, if you can rip them off a junked car (if they will sell them to you) if not you'll have to spend the dough on a new oem cats, say goodbye to a lot of money...

Re: Catalytic converter cut

That's a first, I didn't know they would pass any aftermarket cats, well if the gov't site says they are approved go for it, they can't say anything to you if it's carb approved......

Re: Catalytic converter cut

Advance Auto sells aftermarket magnaflow cats that claim to be 50 state legal and have the correct EPA rating for cali (so says their box)....something to look into since they run only $70ish a piece

No, but removing the four cats and fabing pipe will take some time. Might be a bit more expensive than that but it bolts on.

i already said to go to Advance and they have on their shelf Universal Magnaflow cats....they run $74 each. they need to be welded in of course, but any shop can do that....just have them installed in the factory location and you're set as far as having cats...

have them installed in the correct location in correlation to the o2 sensors...unless you have that code killed by either a tune or mil eliminators...if so then just have them put up where they want to

Re: Catalytic converter cut

you'd be better off trying mil eliminators there thanks to the scanners picking up on the tuner and without the tune "if" it threw a code you'd be permanently screwed until he found a way around it.... however the cats shouldn't trip it being the 50 state legal ones...

Re: Catalytic converter cut

2 pre-cats and 2 cats. got ya!
Again, as a reminder- If you want to do away with the 4 cats you have and start fresh with all new parts and fresh piping, check out that option at mandrelexhaustsystems, they're cheaper than Magnaflow and you'll be in a position to easily bolt on a catback. But then I do know how it is trying to budget alot of things all at once. Good luck with it!

Re: Catalytic converter cut

I know, not funny any more.
On a serious note, the pre-cats have a ceramic comb to absorb emissions until the engine warms up. I removed a set once and the main cats overheated and burned up because they were damaged to begin with.
