3.8 to 5.0 conversion. Need Tips!

We all want a little more giddy up in our Mustangs, and I've decided pouring money into the V6 just isn't going to do it. My friend offered to sell me his 1991 F-150 pickup, and I'm not interested in the truck itself, but the motor and trans. Has a throttle bodied 5.0 in it, good auto trans, and 81,000 miles on it. My question is, how hard would it be to take out my 3.8 and swap it with the 5.0? I know I'll probably have to buy headers, 8.8 rear end, new oil pan, stuff like that. Electrical wise, what is needed? Harnesses ect. Any info would be greatly appreciated..

I'm pretty sure that you will need the k-member out of a 94-95 gt, and as far as the wiring goes i would just pull the harness and ecu out of a 94-95 gt. it would be a lot easier if you could just find a 94-95 gt donor car.

++ this will be the easiest way to go about this swap because if the car is wrecked you'll have every little piece and part you'll need. Including the right intake and ECU and wiring.

It's almost to the point where I just want it faster. I'd love to keep my car, as it is my first Mustang, and poured too much money and time into it. We all know tax return is coming around, and I plan on putting at least 75% towards my car, but the problem is its my only car and I have no clue where to start. I run with a car club (Southern Customs in Ok), don't claim any club, but my V6 running with 2 05/08 GTO's, a 98' Vette, an 00' Camaro, a 04' 1500, all of which are cammed and bottle babies. just need a direction to step in. My Stang, is a 98' 3.8, motor is completely oem, handling wise all I've done is 00' GT wheels (255/40/17) and it helped quite a bit with everything except power.

Re: 3.8 to 5.0 conversion. Need Tips!

Your running against cammed & spraied lsx cars?

You might want to skip the 302 and go straight to a 351, dropping a truck 302 into your v6 is going to make you only slightly faster but it'll sound like its fast

Unless you plan on putting a decent set of heads/intakes/cams on it when it goes in.

I see you say lsx a lot. Are you referring to LS1 Chevy motors?

You could take the 302 and stroke out to a 347 stroker.

Correct, since the 08 gto is an ls2 and not an ls1 I just say lsx cars.

You could but weak block + 347 never ends good

Well there's the 302 in the truck, another friend has a 351 long block, both of them sell the same price, but the truck I could run to the scrap yard an make 200 between parting out and scrapping it. As far as running it, mostly run with Mustangs. We got a 95' V6, 01' V6, 01' Cobra, 08' GT, 00' GT, and my 98' V6. Gotta stay faithful haha.
