I have a stock clutch in mine that was replaced but I can shift at around 4900 before it starts to slip. Granted that I don't suggest red lining your car or pushing your tranny to its limits.

As long as you don't try to force the car into second it shouldn't grind. Grinding could be caused by many things but most of the time it is driver error.(not saying your a bad driver, but it happens to all of us) your problem sounds mechanical though. I would check to make sure your whole tranny is aligned as well as your clutch, pressure plate,shifter,etc... also make sure that you don't have any broken teeth on the pressure plate

If you have a mechanic as a friend I would just let him throw it up on the lift and he can tell. If not its a little more difficult but you can visually tell if something isn't lined up correctly
