Oil guage problem

Today at work I decided to turn my car on and i noticed the oil gauge went to it's normal position and then dropped went back up and dropped did this like 5 times and when it went down it stayed down for a while...

I had a new oil change, and no oil leaks so whenever I check the oil level there was always oil.

I called my mechanic and he said my motor is either about to blow up or it's an oil pressure valve or something...

Help???

I'm willing to bet you have a loose or chaffing wire coming from your oil sending unit. That's where I would look first.

The sending unit is right behind the power steering pump/alternator bracket. You'll have to look there. I'll see if i can find a pic for you.

also just to put your mind at ease the oil pressure gauge since about mid 96 has not been anything more than an idiot light. It clicks on at anything more than about 6psi and just goes to the middle... its not a real gauge so no real worries. If you had oil pressure issues such that the gauge let you know it would already be to late.

Now that oil gauge is sometimes just staying down. What the heck.

Here is a pic of the sending unit. Check this wire to see if its loose. It's under the alternator accessory bracket.

If it's loose it's just able to go back to how it's suppose to be? And it's the black wire plugging into something right?

Not sure, could just be grime and dirt mixed with some oil... Clean it off and see if it comes back right away.

Did you clean off the sending unit and inside the connection terminal? Did it fix your problem?

Well I remember what that stuff was... One time my engine over heated and a friend of mine took the thermostat off to cool it down and radiator fluid sprayed everywhere. That's what that stuff is.

Re: Oil guage problem

Weird... today my car started doing the exact same thing... intermittent signal loss, it frequently drops to zero and jumps back up to normal.

I'm sure glad there was a recent thread with pics to help me fix this... too bad it's below zero outside now. Repairs will have to wait!
