Mileage wrong?

I bought my 99 v6 5 speed mustang from a guy who had 17" cobra r with very low profile tires. As I was driving with my gps, I noticed that the speedometer would show 40 when I was really going 30. We now have a little thicker tires on and it shows 5 mph faster in 1-3 gears but still 10 mph faster in 4 and 5. I don't want to seem dumb here, but wouldn't that mean that the mileage on the car is way more than it actually is? He said he did everything to it when it had about 60k miles on it. I bought it at 113k and now has 124k. I feel like it really only has probably closer to 100-110k what do you guys think?

No speedo is correct. Legally(federal) they can be off like 10%. Would not spend much time worrying about it.
With bigger wheels it takes less revolutions of the wheel to go the same distance, meaning it's been more miles then it shows.

I thought the same thing! About being more miles. But my parents live in Orlando and I go to school in Daytona. I tracked it from my home driveway to my apartment and it showed 56.4 miles. But on mapquest and the gps on my iPhone, the exact same rout is really only 50.6. That's why I think it's way off

I think your speedo is electronic, and can be adjusted w/ a tuner. There is a thing called a speedo healer for motorcycles, I'm sure there is something equivalent for cars that would be cheaper then a tuner if your not ready to drop that much cash. A google search should find you an answer.
