Painting valve covers?

When you remove the valve covers is there a seal? I want to paint my valve covers black. How would y'all do this? Sand, prime, paint?

Yes there is a seal.. clean with degreaser than scuff with scotch brite pad or 1000 grit w/d.. prime than paint
