Cats or no Cats

Hey guys,

I've got the 2004 3.9 Stang and I was wanting to know about this exhaust set up. I just put on the Mac dual conversion kit from American Muscle. I like the sound of it I just want a little more sound. I also know that removing the cats will help performance. I was wondering if I should just remove 2 cats to avoid the rasp of no cats. I've seen you guys go back and forth about the performance gains. I'm not trying to stir anything up, would just like some advice.

Thanks guys

Taking your cats off gain performance no doubt.. I think what you see is ppl talking about the pressure comin out I the pipes? My friend has a 03 and he had a CAI, I was straight stock except I have one cat. I whipped him. Granted some of that may be driving.

That's what the mechanic said when he put turn downs on my car. Why 1? Previous owner may have been on drugs. Lol.

If you mean only on 1 side it's because on our cars the ac condensation drips right on the cat on bank 2 so the pipe gets weak and blows out, and cheap people just put a pipe inplace of the cat, like on my car -__-

Re: Cats or no Cats

Hi flows are the best option but I don't blame you for not wanting to spend that kind of cash on them.

If you want to keep the y-pipe and not spend money on a new midpipe then simply remove 2 of the cats...I believe the last 2 are the ones that reduce the sound the most. Then weld some straight pipes in place of those cats.

Another idea could be to remove the 2 final cats and cut out the y-pipes section. Then weld piping in place of those cats to the dual catback piping. Then you'll have divorced duals which will also flow better and make the exhaust louder.

Re: Cats or no Cats

Well I ended up just removing two of the cats (last two), thinking that just the two wouldn't make it too obnoxiously loud. I was wrong. It sounds amazing from idling to about 3 grand. Anything after that is embarrassing. So I plan to go sell my stock cats, and put that money towards high flow cats. I learned my lesson

If I only have a cat on one bank, would it make more sense to cut that one out too rather than only have a cat on one side and not the other?

I'm not sure. I think it'd help considering the pressure is un even right now
