4200 is probably a pretty overinflated peak power rating. I've run 4000k rms before using two Rockford t2000.1's and 4 rockford T2's, required some serious upgrades to the charging system including a high output 300 amp altenator. It was enough power to to crack my rear window and shatter several trim pieces in my Grand Cherokee.

I've pretty much grown out of the crazy bass stuff and I've got my kids with me most of the time so couldn't use it anyway.

Our little antenators just don't have the amperage to run highpowred systems. You could expect maybe 1000-2000 watts rms on a stock charging system, but I think that's still being a little to optimistic. Run a multimeter connected to the amplifiers output terminals. I believe the formula to determine actual rms power output is voltage times voltage divided by resistance (ohms). This will let you know what you've actually got at a given volume. Sustained bass test work best for this.

Would a capacitor help not screw with the car?

Probably. I think a capacitor holds an extra supply of energy so seems like it could help
