Rear end

What are my best options for a rear end? Ahold I look for a 8.8 with like 3.55 or should I build my 7.5 up with t-lock and gears, and what is a good gear ratio for a v6? I think it comes with like a 2.73 or something like that, for a daily driver is 3.73 to tall? I definately don't want 4.10s cause I wanna be able to do 80 without redlining 5th gear haha, just anyone who did it or with opinions would be appreciated

Re: Rear end

Well check my signature first, it links to a thread I started about gears. Pretty general read and lots of opinions and facts presented.

For the money you would spend making a "built" 7.5 rear, with t-lok, gears, bearings, and everything else... You could buy a pretty new 8.8 and drop gears in it and have something a ton stronger than your "built 7.5". So obviously my opinion is to search around for an 8.8. Much better investment in the long run.

I have 4.10s and my V8 GT hits about 2k @65mph and 2.2k@75mph. That's definitely nothing bad, as I still get over 20mpgs on HWY. 3.73 will be a huge jump from your V6's stock gearing, which is probably a 2.73. You'll feel like you gained 150rwhp, haha. And if you go with 4.10s... Yeah, it's crazy. I feel that gears are one of the best mods you can do for the price. Ultimately, choosing your gear ratio is a personal preference. Some swear by 3.73s, while others swear by 4.10s, and some say, "**** you guys!" and swear by 3.90s. Haha.

Re: Rear end

All preference! I decided to just buy the $200 tlock for my V6 and pulled 3.73s out of a Ford Ranger... Works great! And yes... going from 2.73s to 3.73s with the addition of positive traction felt like throwing on an extra 50 rwhp! And now my wimpy 6 can do a big-boy burnout... lol... no more one-wheel peel

I've heard these 7.5" rear ends can withstand a lot of power... definitely more than I'll ever put into mine anyways, so that's why I didn't swap to an 8.8. But if you find a GT rear end assembly with the gear ratio you like already intact... go for it!

Stock 99-04 GTs come with 3.27s. Which is a pathetic gear..

Unless you find a GT 8.8 with the gears already in it.

Some idiot at a junk yard quoted me like $1000 for a gt rear end with 30,000 miles saying I would need bigger calipers and all this stuff, can't I just keep mine?

Go with 8.8 rear end it opens lots of opportunity. Motor swapping to v8, or forced induction if you plan on it.

You can get a brand new 8.8 for like $1400 or so already built.. That junk yard one must've been gold plates and diamond encrusted.

I'm going to get the 8.8 rear end too. It will fit whatever needs I have. It's by far the best mod a v6 can have.

I thought 99-04 v6 had the 3.27 gear ratio as opposed to the 2.73 of the 94-98. Or am i wrong in this assumption?

Yea but I was surprised one day to find out that someone who owned the car before me switched out the rear end with one from a 94-98 cause they blew out the stock one... No wonder it felt so sluggish

You can usually get the 8.8 rear with the axles and brakes..

A mustang salvage yard in Georgia is selling one for 500 with all necessary hardware. Been tempted to do it with my refund, but instead i owe 965 in taxes. So that's not happening anytime soon
