Water pump question

What are those holes on top of the water pump? Why are they there and What happens if something gets in them?

That is the "weep hole". If you see coolant leaking from the weep hole the water pump must be replaced. Shaft bearing failure results shortly after. A small amount of gray discoloration is normal. A wet area or heavy brown deposits indicate the pump seal has failed. -FYI-
