Anyone upgrade alternator?

What results when you have to replace alternator and you put in a higher amperage unit, like a 130 amp unit? What if you have UD pulleys too?

Re: Anyone upgrade alternator?

Before I got my UDP I read that higher amp alternators are recommended to solve charging issues created by underdrive pulleys, ya know, like massive stereo systems.

Shouldnt kill your car. If anything it would make ur amp go into protect from low voltage.

Re: Anyone upgrade alternator?

I have underdrive pulleys and put in a Redtop Optima battery years ago. That battery is bad ***. I remember after installing it how it eliminated any hesitation when AC max was turned on. Didn't notice when the fan came on any more either. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 130 amp like the one AM sells, just to bring it all together and have things running all that much better on the electrical side. Anyone ever considering an Optima battery, I highly recommend it if you are put in the position to replace a bad battery. Well, looks like I'm going to start researching a quality alternator. I'll post what I find.
Lastly- besides the alternator itself, what is the "electrical feeder wire" called that has to be upgraded (beefed up) at the same time?

Do the big 3 for your car also, (that may be what Robb is talking about i think) it helps get you .5-.8 volts more. Which is a decent amount. Good for systems.

Re: Anyone upgrade alternator?

Has anyone purchased either one of the alternators for sale on American Muscle? There is the one I posted above "PA Performance", and then there is the chrome one they offer with the V6 ignition parts section. Any one try either manufacturer?
This is the chrome one:
Chrome Alternator - 130 Amp (94-00 V6) - Free Shipping!

I have a 130amp from PA! It works great and it even seems like my sub hits harder. It does have a bit of an electrical whine though...

Most likely does hit harder, it's not dropping volts as bad do your getting more power to it. More power = hits harder

In 2001 Ford replaced the standard GT alternator with the Cobra unit to in part compensate for the under drive pulleys for the Bullitt package.

Keep in mind that this 130 amp alternator is only putting out up to 130 amps at peak, and only if load requires it; it does not put out a constant 130 amps. This makes it a safe option for those who have the high draw stereo's or other high amp requirements in their car.
