Need some help plz!

There is a metal ring that fits up next to the u-joint right up front right before u get to the transmission. It is around 5 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. What is this ring called? Somebody told me it was a balance ring. This ring came loose and I was wondering if this is something that I can fix.
